Bill King's 2007 novel "Hack" (published by Trafford Publishing), which is getting a renewed marketing push in 2013, is a story of survival of the fittest, set in an Alabama cotton mill village.

"Hack" is about the desperate and crazy happenings of teenage boys in 1950s in the cotton mill villages that sprang up in the South during the difficult times following the Depression.

The main characters of the story are Hack, One Lung, Woosie, Snake and Poolroom. Life means so little to them that they will try anything, from jumping off the Tennessee River Bridge to climbing the tower to the mill's shift change siren.

King hopes readers will feel the characters' pain and show compassion for impoverished kids whose parents are working long hours just to survive and have little time to direct and influence their children about the realities of adult life.
