Barbara Bannister and Connie Duncan Share LETTERS FROM THE HOME FRONT

Barbara Bannister and Connie Duncan use their childhoods growing up on the United States home front during World War II as inspiration to create a charming historical fiction novel, "Letters from the Home Front: World War II" (published by Abbott Press).

Cousins Carolyn and Patty haven't seen each other in years, but a relative's wedding gives them the perfect opportunity to sit down and catch up. They decide to bring the letters they wrote to each other as children and reminisce about growing up on the home front during World War II. Patty is in Nebraska with a father who has been excused from service because of his blind eye. Carolyn is in Oregon where her Japanese American friends are fleeing to Canada to escape the camps. Readers will be immersed in the world of gas rationing, war stamps and united patriotism as seen through the perspective of two young girls.

"Older readers will remember experiences of that time, while younger readers learn that children do have a role to play in a democracy," says Bannister.

An excerpt from a letter dated July 15, 1942 in "Letters from the Home Front":

"Mama has volunteered to watch for Japanese planes at a lookout station west of Mansfield. The lookout station has posters of Japanese and also American planes on the walls. When a plane is identified it is recorded on a sheet of paper. If the plane is not an American plane, the report is called in and American planes scramble to search for it. I feel so patriotic these days. My eyes tear up whenever I see the American flag or hear the national anthem."

Connie Duncan grew up in a small Oregon community during World War II. She had a 48-year teaching career and wrote stories and plays for students. This is her first book.
