While outright racism has never ceased to exist in the modern American society, neither did the humor that was a means of coping with it. Re-examining the lives of African Americans who carried the burden of being free men in a society still unable to totally accept the fact, the Virginian Clarence E. Freeman presents a witty but balanced account of federal racism and compartmentalization in a refreshingly different perspective with "O.U.C.H! Our Unwelcome Colored Help". It is about his experience of bigotry in the workplace through long years at his job in the Quality Control and Methods Engineering Branches, Planning Administrative Division, Supply Department, Naval Air Station, Norfolk, Virginia.

There is profundity in this work and it is thought-provoking. The humor is a required function for objectivity-and Freeman's life story shows how African American males are subject to various forms of bigotry, essentially and literally, from the cradle to the grave. It is a pattern that seems to be embedded in American society. Freeman shows how he adjusted his life to a system that dehumanizes his people-and it shows a deep understanding of history. Using his own techniques in coping with the stresses of racism and leading a productive life, "O.U.C.H! Our Unwelcome Colored Help" documents how he was able to be a cultured, free and even grudgingly respected member of an imperfect society.

Freeman can come up with a good laugh or two even in difficult times. His book is an absorbing collection of anecdotes, an anthology of tips for a lifeway that circumvents many fallacies of race, racial superiority and racial purity, including the more brutal forms of abuse that Freeman and his people are subject to. It defends against madness and incompetence that comes from ignorance. Ultimately, it is about how his people have moved on with their lives, despite what living in America entails. Though America is not a paradise for him or them, it offers enough in the way to living right. This, Clarence Freeman tells readers in his elevating story, is what matters in the book of free men.

Clarence E. Freeman's book "O.U.C.H! Our Unwelcome Colored Help" will be featured at the 2014 Frankfurt Book Fair in Frankfurt, Germany, on Oct. 8 - 12, 2014.
