To bring traditional folktales and their morals to a new generation of children, Laxmi Jagadish wrote her new book, "Afternoons with Grandma: A Collection of Folktales from Around the World" (published by iUniverse).

"I have this romantic notion that my children and future grandchildren will love the stories that I read or heard when I was young, and share them with others," Jagadish says. "These folktales are also a great way to teach children good values and I have used them with my own children."

In "Afternoons with Grandma," siblings Josh and Tamara love hearing their grandmother tell stories. Each story has a subtle lesson that teaches the twins how to deal with experiences they encounter as they grow up. The stories tell of bravery, perseverance and believing in oneself. The twins learn that the stories contain messages for people of all cultures and lifestyles.

An excerpt from "Afternoons with Grandma":

"It was hard climbing the cliff with a three-year-old clinging to his neck, but Kim concentrated on getting as high up as possible. He could now hear the rumble behind him and knew that the great wave was approaching. It was coming closer, and as Dad had said, the sound was deafening. Kim did not dare turn around to look. Neither did Mary, who kept shouting to Kim to hurry and keep climbing."
