Road Less Traveled Theater to Host Series of Short Original Plays Beginning 9/19

Road Less Traveled Productions (RLTP) today announced that a new addition to Western New York's (WNY's) flourishing theatre community will find a regular home at the Road Less Traveled Theater beginning Wednesday, September 19th, when The Honesty Theater Presents Fairy Tales, an evening of short original plays by local playwright and Honesty Theater founder Heather Ackerman.

"What is Prince Charming like on his cigarette break?" is just one of the questions that Ackerman promises will be addressed by Fairy Tales, a collection of mostly "quirky, whimsical, and even downright hilarious" short comedies and skits which occasionally veer into deeper waters. All of the pieces, directed by Ackerman and performed by a cast of Honesty Theater regulars including Steve Brachmann, Brianna Kaminskas, Joseph Mallison, and RLTP Literary Director Jon Elston, revolve around a general fairy-tale theme; other questions to be examined onstage include "Is the Cyclops Medusa's perfect man? Where do vampires make wedding registries? And would Sleeping Beauty get out of bed more promptly if she had a Sassy Gay Friend?"

Fairy Tales will be presented for one night only at 7:30 PM on Wednesday, September 19th, at the Road Less Traveled Theater, in the Market Arcade Film & Arts Centre. Honesty Theater will subsequently continue to present evenings of similarly themed original short plays one Wednesday per month during the RLTP season.

Elston, the Founder and Moderator of RLTP's Emanuel Fried New Play Workshop, called this new partnership "a natural fit in RLTP's ongoing mission to support and showcase new work by local playwrights," adding that he discovered Honesty Theater in late 2010 and "begged, actually begged, Heather Ackerman to let me perform some of her material... she's just that funny."

Honesty Theater was founded in May of 2010 in Batavia, NY, where the group performed for eighteen months at the Harvester 56 and the East Bethany Town Hall, premiering 90 new plays by Ackerman, Mallison, and guest playwrights like Justin Karcher (RLTP New Play Workshop Alumnus and author of Last Of The Sensitive Bastards and Men Of Like Passions),Jon Zelasko (RLTP's 2011 Buffalo Young Writers Contest Grand-Prize Winner), Samantha Ackerman, Benjamin Kowalsky, Shannon Murphree, Justin Reilly, and Ray Stankovic. The company has recently made Downtown Buffalo appearances at Buffalo East and Rust Belt Books.

Steadfast devotees of the "One Day Play" movement in WNY, Honesty Theater company members will initially read the plays on the morning of the 19th, spend eight hours rehearsing, and then perform the work for the first time in front of a live audience that night. Similar local instances of this approach have been seen at MF24H, Musicalfare's twenty-four hour project seen most recently in June 2012 at 710 Main Street (the former Studio Arena) and Niagara University's long-standing annual "Twenty-Four Hour Festival."
