CREATURE/COMFORT, a new queer sci-fi rom-com by drag duo Mann & Materials, is making its world premiere at the Exponential Festival in Brooklyn. Directed by Benita de Wit (Sunset Blvd), this original synth-pop musical features an all-trans creative team and all-drag king cast.
It's 1953, and Dr. Bartholomew Bright and his faithful assistant Kevin have one goal: to make the perfect monster. But with the FBI closing in, will their experiments succeed? Or will they be caught before Kevin has the chance to confess that his feelings for Dr. Bright are more than just scientific? Created by drag duo Mann & Materials, this campy musical comedy asks just how much we’ll transform for love. Featuring an original synth-pop score, fantastical monstrous puppets, and homosexual awakenings, Creature/Comfort invites its audience to find (and lovingly embrace) the monster within.
The Exponential Festival is a 501c3 January performance festival for NYC-based early-career artists working in experimental performance. The participants in this multi-artist, multi-venue festival are committed to ecstatic creativity in the face of commercialism. Exponential is driven by inclusiveness and a diversity of artists, forms, and ideas coupled with utopian resource-sharing, mentoring and the championing of risky, rigorous work in eclectic fields. theexponentialfestival.org
