Olivia Harrison and Martin Scorsese to Celebrate George Harrison's THE THIRD EYE at BAM
The book gathers more than 200 images George Harrison took while touring the world with the Beatles.
On Oct 6, BAM and Greenlight Bookstore welcome Olivia Harrison, curator of THE THIRD EYE: Early Photographs in conversation with Academy Award-winning filmmaker Martin Scorsese for an intimate evening celebrating the debut of a remarkable new collection of photographs taken by George Harrison.
Spanning 1963 to 1970, THE THIRD EYE: Early Photographs brings together more than 200 images taken by Harrison as he traveled the world with the Beatles. Candid, curious, and often playful, the photographs offer a rare glimpse behind the mythology of Beatlemania—from the band's earliest days on the road to their unprecedented international fame and encounters in places as varied as Liverpool, Adelaide, Rishikesh, the Eiffel Tower, and the beaches of Tahiti.
Harrison joins Scorsese on BAM's Howard Gilman Opera House stage for a conversation along with some of George's photographs, exploring the musician's distinctive eye and the extraordinary world he captured through his camera. The images reveal Harrison as an observant and inventive photographer, documenting the people, places, and fleeting moments around him with the same wit, intelligence, and spirit of experimentation that defined his music. Long before the age of the smartphone, Harrison was turning the camera on himself and his surroundings, creating an intimate visual record of the long and winding road traveled by four young musicians from Liverpool.
The evening offers a unique perspective on one of the most transformative periods in popular culture, bringing together two artists whose work has profoundly shaped the way we see music, film, and the world around us.
Tickets go on sale to BAM members on Aug 11, and to the general public on Aug 13. They start at $35, or $95 with a copy of the book. All Orchestra and Mezzanine tickets automatically include a copy of the book.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Olivia Trinidad Harrison is a film producer and poet and the widow of musician George Harrison of the Beatles. Harrison began her career in the music industry in Los Angeles at A&M Records, where she met George and helped run his Dark Horse record label. Harrison co-produced the Grammy Award-winning film Concert for George and received an Emmy in 2012 for her role as producer on Martin Scorsese's documentary George Harrison: Living in the Material World. In 2022, she won a Grammy for the All Things Must Pass reissue and an Emmy for the Peter Jackson-directed documentary series The Beatles: Get Back. In 2024, Harrison served as executive producer on Beatles '64. She oversees the Material World Foundation, established by George Harrison in 1973, which has responded to humanitarian crises around the world and partnered with Scorsese's Film Foundation to preserve and restore 13 culturally significant films.
Martin Scorsese is an Academy Award-winning director and one of the most influential filmmakers working today. Scorsese's acclaimed films include Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, The Last Temptation of Christ, Goodfellas, Gangs of New York, The Departed, The Wolf of Wall Street, The Irishman, and Killers of the Flower Moon. Scorsese has directed numerous documentaries, including the Peabody Award-winning No Direction Home: Bob Dylan, The Last Waltz, A Letter to Elia, and the Emmy-nominated docuseries Pretend It's a City. He received Emmy Awards for his work directing and producing George Harrison: Living in the Material World, and collaborated with longtime documentary editor David Tedeschi on Beatles '64. Scorsese is the founder and chair of The Film Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation and protection of motion picture history.
