The Moonflower is set to play at Tête à Tête Opera Festival 2011 on 18 and 19 August. The Moonflower is a fusion of contemporary opera, theatre, circus and video art, inspired by
the lives of two remarkable figures: Margaret Mee, a British botanist and artist explorer, and
Chico Mendes, a Brazilian rubber tapper, environmentalist and activist.
Further performances are planned for autumn this year. The Moonflower or the Queen of the Night
Margaret and Chico meet as spirits in the afterlife. Their love of the Amazon rainforest inspires a
journey full of magic and mysticism, but also of human struggle, love, greed, and above all, the
undying nature of the human spirit. Deep in the flooded forest we re-discover the Moonflower, or
the Queen of the Night. She opens once in a blue moon and dies with the first morning star. Her life
is short but so precious and beautiful it is worth fighting for. The Moonflower is the leitmotif,
holding the whole piece together.
Cast includes internationally acclaimed singer Maya Sapone who recently performed in Baroque
Box at Greenwhich and Docklands International Festival; Georgia Knower (ENO, Royal Albert Hall);
aerial strap artist Jesús Capel (founding member of famous Spanish circus company Los Perros y
Gattos) amongst others. It also features guitarist Fabricio Mattos, winner of the 2009 Julian Bream
Award, an award for artistic excellence and distinction given in London by the legendary
guitarist Julian Bream. Composed by Mario Ferraro (Brazil), written by Eva Daní?ková (Czech
Republic), directed by Maja Milatovi?-Ovadia (Serbia) and conducted by Andrew Morley (UK), this opera gathers an international team of artists from four continents in celebration of cultural diversity.
