The Winthrop Playmakers will present the Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize for Drama winning play, "The Shadow Box" by Michael Cristofer, April 21 - 24, 2016. As directed by Nicholas Raponi, this powerful production is being performed at Memorial Hall at Winthrop High School, which will be reconfigured to an intimate black box space onstage. The Winthrop Playmakers are also spotlighting three local organizations associated with topics faced by the families in the play: AIDS Action Committee, Survivors by the Sea, and the Winthrop Council on Aging/Senior Center.

"The Shadow Box" takes place over twenty-four hours, following three terminally ill patients dwelling in separate cottages on a hospital's grounds. The three patients agree to be part of a psychological study in which they are interviewed by a psychiatrist while being attended and visited by family and close friends: Agnes and her mother Felicity, estranged further by the latter's dementia; Brian and Beverly, whose marital complications are exacerbated by Brian's new lover, Mark; and Joe and Maggie, unready for the strain of Joe's impending death and its effect on their teenage son.

Our cast includes local actors Brian Dion (Saugus), Anthony Turilli (Saugus), Karen Dervin (Billerica), Kaitlyn Gobiel (Billerica), Eric Lamarche (Lowell), Kevin Morin (Winthrop), Amy Schram (Peabody), Sandi McDonald (Jamaica Plain), and Andrew Quinney (Medford).
