Theatre Professionals and Community Members Collaborate During Suburban Summer Theatre Surge

Artists from Suburbia, a leader in new and experimental community-based theatre on Boston's south shore, today announced complete dates for the 2017 Suburban Summer Theatre Surge, a new theatre season combining the talents of community members with Boston-area theatre professionals. The Suburban Summer Theatre Surge's programming explore perspectives of marginalized individuals, including individuals living with disabilities and the GLBTQ community.

The Suburban Summer Theatre Surge programming includes:

· Second Evening of Original One-Act Plays - June 9, 7 p.m., East Bridgewater Public Library - Artists From Suburbia presents staged readings of four plays by local playwrights: "Hell By Fire, Hell By Ice" by M.J. Halberstadt, "Easter at the Entrée Gold" by John Minigan, "Take My Hand" by Rosa Nagle, and "The Gender Agenda" by G.L. Horton.

· Les Nuls - June 15, 7 p.m., East Bridgewater Community Television Studio; July 10, 6 p.m., Brockton Public Library; July 27, 6 p.m., Ames Free Library, Easton - Scituate-based playwright Alex Moon's new play exploring classism among French revolutionaries will be presented through a series of three public staged readings. Audience members can provide feedback at each reading, creating a community-workshopped piece.

· A Little Princess - July 21-23, 7 p.m. Fuller Craft Museum, Brockton - Directed by artistic director Andrew Child, this family-friendly production of Frances Hodgson Burnett's novel of the same name highlights the seemingly-harmless dangers of xenophobia and classism through puppetry, choral music, and multimedia design. Artists From Suburbia will also present a sensory-friendly version of the production on July 22 at 2 p.m.

"The Suburban Summer Theatre Surge continues Artists From Suburbia's mission to bring local theatre artists and playwrights from various backgrounds together in unique collaborations," said Andrew Child, Artists From Suburbia's artistic director. "We're thrilled to immerse the south shore community in new works and experimental adaptations, providing involvement opportunities for all members of the community as performers, designers, technicians, and active audience members. At this tense political and cultural moment, we're also excited to explore experiences of marginalized communities, ensuring that participation in theatre is possible for everyone on Boston's south shore."

Tickets for the second evening of original one-act plays and "Les Nuls" are free, but seats are limited. We highly encourage reserving tickets via our website, artistsfromsuburbia.weebly.com. Tickets for "A Little Princess" are $10 for adults and $5 for children under twelve with all proceeds going to the Fuller Craft Museum. Ticket information will be available at a later date.
