The Independent Drama Society Presents ROMEO AND JULIET 9/16-25

From September 16-25, the Independent Drama Society presents a punk-rock update of Shakespeare's ROMEO AND JULIET, continuing its a season of love and loathing.
Experience the irreverence of punk rebellion in a fierce new production of the Western world's most famous love story. Inspired by bands such as the Addicts, the Casualties, and Black Flag, eight young actors make Shakespeare's story their own with old words, new attitude, and a youthful spirit that will not be silenced.

"ROMEO AND JULIET is a play full of fire - hot tempers, burning desires, and scorching wit," says director Sarah Gazdowicz. "The rebellious, impetuously youthful spirit of the punk movement perfectly complements the extreme nature of ROMEO AND JULIET - creating clothing from scraps, finding daily sustenance with meager resources, making music from discord, either joyfully embracing or violently rejecting ideas about politics, music and social conduct. By borrowing from this aesthetic, we will ignite the verse and bring the fire of the words to new life."

William Schuller and Megan Cooper will play the title characters in the Independent Drama Society production, which will also feature Nicanor Campos, Chris Larson, Adam Lauver, Alexa Ray-Correia, Dave Rogers, and Rebbekah Vega-Romero.

The design team includes Abigail Neuhoff (Production Design & Dramaturg), Derek DaSilva (Properties Supervisor), and Matt Arnold (Fight Choreographer). Alexa Justice is the Stage Manager.

ROMEO AND JULIET will run for two weeks in the Factory Theatre, 791 Tremont Street in Boston's South End. Tickets can be purchased at www.independentdramasociety.com for $15, at the door for $17, or for $13 for students and seniors.

"It has been such a joy to watch Sarah work," says Artistic Director Lindsay Eagle, who directed Sarah Gazdowicz as Evelyn in last year's The Shape of Things. "She is first and foremost an actor, and a lover of theatre, and uses that unique perspective to bring out powerful performances in her actors. Always treating the text with careful affection, Sarah will make sure Shakespeare's words are preserved, while breathing new, youthful life into the play itself."

In its third season, a season of love and loathing, the Independent Drama Society explores how powerful emotions can inspire ordinary human beings to do the impossible--or cause their ultimate downfall. In August, with David Auburn's PROOF, IDS explored family ties and the bond between father and daughter. In September, transcendent passion binds lovers together in Shakespeare's ROMEO AND JULIET. Greed and fear drive businessmen to take desperate action in the January production of David Mamet's GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS. In April, true love keeps lovers together in the heart-rending afterlife of Sarah Ruhl's EURYDICE.
