The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess Day Held In Boston 9/30

In honor of the 76th anniversary of the world premiere, Mayor Thomas M. Menino proclaims Friday, September 30, 2011, as "The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess" Day in the City of Boston. 

WHO: Audra McDonald, Norm Lewis, David Alan Grier, director Diane Paulus and the cast of Harvard University's American Repertory Theater's "The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess"; Emerson College's President M. Lee Pelton; representatives of the Gershwin family; city officials; and representatives from Harvard University.

The American Repertory Theater (A.R.T.) is one of the country's most celebrated regional theaters and the winner of numerous awards - including the Tony Award, the Pulitzer Prize, and the Elliot Norton and I.R.N.E. Awards. The A.R.T. was founded at Harvard University by Robert Brustein in 1980, who served as Artistic Director until 2002, when he was succeeded by RoBert Woodruff. Since Diane Paulus became Artistic Director in 2008, the A.R.T. has produced innovative work that has enhanced its core mission to expand the boundaries of theater including productions such as Sleep No More, The Blue Flower, R.Buckminster Fuller: The History (and Mystery) of the Universe, and Prometheus Bound. The A.R.T. kicked off its 2011-12 Season with the sold-out run of The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess, which runs at the Loeb Drama Center, 64 Brattle St., Harvard Square, through Sunday, Oct. 2.
