Teatr ZAR Presents CAESARIAN SECTION, 5/29-6/1

By:

Poland's renown Teatr ZAR will make only two stops during its upcoming U.S. tour- the San Francisco International Art Festival and in Boston at the Charlestown Working Theater. Director
Jaroslaw Fret and the company's more than 10 years of investigative research and development into ancient sacred songs. ZAR will perform the acclaimed "Caesarian Section" the first in the company's performance triptych "The Gospels of Childhood". This is the company's third U.S. tour.

Teatr ZAR is the Resident Company at the Grotowski Institute in Wroclaw, Poland. The company's performances are part of a much longer process of research, expeditions, personal explorations, and transformation. The musical structure of this performance was developed from a base of polyphonic Corsican songs, through which the company weaves Bulgarian, Icelandic, and Chechen songs. Teatr ZAR takes audiences on a journey of polyphonic sound. Death, mourning, ritual and resurrection are essential themes in Teatr ZAR's work. The group represents one of the most interesting trends in contemporary Polish theatre, described as 'theatre out of the spirit of music'.

The Charlestown Working Theater was founded on the idea that a theater and a community can engage in a dialogue which results in creative, artistic expression, an exchange of ideas, and a deeper understanding of the people who make up the community. CWT has maintained this philosophy throughout its history and has remained dedicated to serving the cultural needs of Charlestown and greater Boston.

CWT has presented local, national, and interNational Theatre companies as part of its Residency Program. Companies include Double Edge Theatre (Ashfield, MA), Mabou Mines (NY, NY) Theatre Kranevit (Berlin) Great Small Works (NY,NY), Grupo Jicara Teatro (Buenos Aires), NCA Small Theatre (Armenia) and Beau Jest Moving Theatre (Boston, MA).

Teatr ZAR is presented as part of CWT's International Contemporary Performance Series, Spring 2011. CWT presented Armenia's National Centre for Aesthetics Small Theatre and Italy's Versiladanza as part of this series, and will present The Natasha Plays by Russian playwright Yaroslava Pulinovich in June, 2011.
