MWALIM TRIO Will Headline Blues & Soul Night in Postunderground Jazz Series
Mwalim, ZYG 808, and Richard Johnson perform at Postunderground's immersive listening series
Postunderground continues its evolving live performance programming with an evening of deep groove, improvisation, and genre-spanning musical expression as the BLUES & SOUL series returns featuring The MWALIM TRIO.
Set for Friday, June 12, 2026 at 7:30 PM, the performance brings together blues, soul, jazz, and original compositions in a live setting designed to emphasize musicianship, spontaneity, and audience connection. The series is curated as an immersive listening experience where live performance takes priority over background entertainment.
The MWALIM TRIO features Mwalim on guitar, keys, and vocals, alongside ZYG 808 on drums and Richard Johnson on bass. Together, the trio delivers a fluid, responsive sound built on groove, improvisation, and storytelling through rhythm and melody.
Mwalim is a multi-award-winning composer, vocalist, producer, and bandleader. He is a three-time New England Urban Music Award winner for jazz and co-founder and music director of The GroovaLottos, the six-time Grammy-nominated soul-funk collective. His catalog includes the critically acclaimed album THUNDERCHILD as well as recent singles such as "A Party at the Crossroads," "Always Right There," "A Sweet Memory," "Your Hands," and his latest release "ROLLING JOINTS."
His work has drawn comparisons to influential artists such as Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, Gil Scott-Heron, and Anthony Hamilton, reflecting a tradition of music that merges artistry, message, and emotional depth. Check out his music here: http://linktr.ee/daphunkeeprofessor
Currently active in both touring and studio work, Mwalim approaches each live performance as a unique creative moment shaped by audience interaction and improvisational direction. The BLUES & SOUL performance continues this approach, moving between reinterpretations of classic material and original compositions shaped in real time.
Postunderground's music series has established itself as a grassroots platform for live performance, redefining the traditional VFW space into a cultural venue centered on artist-driven programming, community engagement, and experimental live music.
