A.R.T./MXAT Institute Presents DRUMS IN THE NIGHT 12/16-18

By:

The American Repertory Theater/Moscow Art Theater Institute for Advanced Theater Training presents its second production of the 2010-11 season - Drums in the Night by Bertolt Brecht, directed by Robert Scanlan, and performed by the Institute Class of 2011.

The production is presented at Loeb Experimental Theater, 64 Brattle Street, Harvard Square, Cambridge.
Performance dates and times are 12/16, 12/17, and 12/18 at 7:30pm.

Written at the end of World War I by a very young Bertolt Brecht (he was barely out of his teens) Drums in the Night tells the story of a soldier who returns from the war only to find his sweetheart engaged to be married to a rich industrialist who has made his fortune from manufacturing war materiel. The soldier tries to reclaim his intended while a revolution in the street attempts the overthrow of the regime that sent a generation to war. Brecht depicts two competing ways to re-build a future for the defeated Germany, one a personal struggle to marry and start a "replacement" generation, the other a revolutionary sacrifice to build a new political system.

Director Robert Scanlan, has staged many previous Brecht plays and presents this play in an open staging strongly reflective of German Expressionist experimentation at the beginning of the so-called Weimar period in Germany. Scanlan's recent work includes "Codeswitch 7" last year at Oberon, and his staging of Yusef Komunyakaa's theatrical version of Gilgamesh at the 92nd Street Y in New York City. He has directed locally for Sugan Theatre Company, the Actor's Shakespeare Project, and The American Repertory Theatre. He is a past winner of Boston's Best Director award, and served for many years as president of The Poet's Theatre. He is Professor of the Practice of Theatre in the English Department at Harvard University.

Ticket prices are $10 for the general public; $5 for students, and seniors, free to A.R.T. subscribers. They can be purchased at the Loeb Drama Center or by calling the A.R.T. Box Office at (617) 547-8300 or online at www.americanrepertorytheater.org.
