Cast of LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS

Ah, LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS. I remember when the movie was released on VHS (that stands for video home system, for those playing the home game) and my family had rented it. I made sure the house would be empty for at least 2 hours and I got everything set up. I got the boom box, a blank cassette tape, and the television all warmed up and got to work. I set up the boom box on a stool on it's side, so the mike would be as close to the television speaker as possible and pushed record. It was tough, but I found a good spot to switch from side 'A' to side 'B'. That should tell you how long I have loved this musical and how much.

Enter our Greek chorus, they help to set the tone. It takes place in the 1950's and the three-part harmony of this chorus blends and compliments the original sound of the era. The three ladies will be narrating the show through song. Greek choruses are a great way to help move the story along, and fits this particular musical.

The curtains open after the director's speech and the set is unlike anything I have seen here at Boise Little Theater. A large brick wall about 10 feet back from the proscenium arch leaves me with the question, how would they change scenes and how quick can they be? But it was a trick wall, that when pulled back reveals the inside of Mushnik's Florist stop and an alley that leads to the front of the shop front center stage upstage. What a wonderful difference for a set here. There are two side stages, but it would have been awkward to use those, so bravo director and scenic designers.

The show is about the innocence of the 1950's and how easy it would be to invade the Earth. An alien comes down to Earth and is purchased by an innocent, naive young man who is in love with his co-worker, Audrey. Throughout the musical, we find out to what lengths he would go to impress her. The lengths to which he'd go, the depths to which he'd sink.

The cast was well chosen. They all have strong vocals and a good, pleasing tone to listen to. It made for an entertaining time and I am glad that I saw the show. The characters, all of them were realized in a fun and exciting way to watch.

You will be glad if you come and see this show as well, and always remember, don't feed the plant!

LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS will run on weekends through September 19th. Click here for details and to purchase tickets.
