IMHO, it seems not so much a concern for safety precaution as it does an attempt to make everything out to be soooooo much more dangerous than it really is in order to put the performers on some irrational pedestal. But whatever.

Way to play BWW psychoanalyst about some fairly innocuous comments. Can I play? Your diagnosis seems like a subconscious nod to the content of the show we're discussing, so at at least there is some point to luvthe playing Integrity Police on the Next To Normal threads. That's fun, thanks for keeping our discussions properly themed. re: Happy Opening 'Next to Normal!!!

Anyway, happy opening Next to Normal. Break a leg, you guys. Just don't die.

haha, yeah, Emcee, we were just being silly- no need to get annoyed by it re: Happy Opening 'Next to Normal!!!

Sometimes (and this is totally NOT directed specifically at Emcee, or anyone else imparticular for that matter, truly) I feel like BWWers can be SO uptight it's ridiculous. You try and make one lighthearted comment and you get bashed for it.

Actually, a rather simple first reaction to a bunch of posts that have been made throughout the day. No more than a "just sayin'" comment. But if you'd like to continue assuming that I really put that much thought into it in order to keep your subconscious occupied, by all means.

Or, you could blame the ever-easy fallback of "tone is hard to get on the internet!" re: Happy Opening 'Next to Normal!!!

And Craww, let me "just say" that you likely put as much thought into coming up with your "playing too" accusation as you seem to think I put into the posts you were responding to. But that's fine; invention is really hard work! re: Happy Opening 'Next to Normal!!!

ETA: You won't be able to see the band the whole time because of sliding set pieces, btw.

Considering the bulk of what I posted counts for less than a third your overall total of words, I kind of doubt that. But that's par for the course with your discourse, so I understand.

Is this the part where I decide that I have better things to do than argue over something that really has nothing to do with the topic at hand, but was actually created to dredge up a personal vendetta? re: Happy Opening 'Next to Normal!!!

I guess that's how it goes when you're stuck fighting someone else's battles, so I understand.

Glad we both understand each other, no?

luvtheEmcee, you have no idea what you're talking about.

Thank you for that, jaystarr. Few things are more comforting than a constant. A constant like Rapp and his mad and uncomfortable gesticulation always being funny. re: Happy Opening 'Next to Normal!!!

Can I just say: I was extraordinarily surprised that I actually loved this current cast SO MUCH more than I thought I would, considering I had previously been totally gung-ho about the Feeling Electric workshop cast (especially Amy, Annaleigh, and Anthony- ha, I just realized, all the A's!). But it actually ends up that I think Alice suites the role over all SO much more than Amy would have (still adore Amy in general though), and Jenn is a totally kick ass Natalie.

BUT: Anthony is the one and only member of the workshop cast who I truly miss in the show. Don't get me wrong, Asa is fantastic, he really is. NOTHING against Asa. But Anthony just has that glorious waily edge to his voice that works SO perfectly for this score- particularly Feeling Electric. So yeah, basically, watching that video just reminds me how much I wish Anthony was still in the show.

But hey at least he's still there when you go to SEE the show, and more than happy to sign autographs re: Happy Opening 'Next to Normal!!!

I actually agree. I like the different take on the role, but I think he might be the only one in this cast that I don't like better than the NYMF cast. I think Alice and Brian are a hundred times better than Joe and Amy were, and that's coming from someone who liked Joe and Amy a lot. My only real criticism with Amy was that she looked too young to believably have teenaged children. But I'm a big fan of hers.

Though I can't claim to have seen the NYMF cast, I must also agree. Though it's of course a different matter for the character of Natalie, considering it's a completely different character.

Asa was good, but admittedly creeped me out in a way that really didn't serve the character.

EXACTLY. he's the only person from that cast who I really do like BETTER than the current cast.

I really did love Amy- in fact, I still kind of prefer her VOICE to Alice's (just as far as the sound of it- it's a personal preference thing). But it's just she so didn't fit the role, and now seeing Alice do it I really realize that. First off, she was too young- and even if she isn't technically (I know the characters where supposed to have been young when they got married), she just SEEMS too young to do it. Secondly, she just.. I don't even know how to explain it. She just didn't fit the role like Alice does.

And don't even get me started on Brian and Aaron in comparison to Joe and Benjamin. Joe and Benjamin were really good, they were, but basically Brian and Aaron take what they did and do it like... even better. They kick. ass. and I love them so much. haha

I am glad Alice Ripley was cast otherwise I would have never seen this show unless it transferred and lasted long enough for a cast change. The subject matter appeals (and I love dark, edgy musicals) but I have issues sitting through Amy Spanger- lead performances. I get why people like her, but her straight tone vocals and acting don't appeal to me. And I have seen her in several shows.

I suppose this is biased coming from an Alice fangirl though...

Brian is without a doubt my favorite cast member. His performance is just so, so perfect. I was never a fan before this show; I just... didn't understand his appeal. And now I finally do.

Seriously, Brian is INCREDIBLE.

I can't even describe how emotional the ending was for me, the way he played it. There was just something about how... subtlely he did it. Like... he cries so hard just before Let There Be Light, and yet it's not this big overdrawn sobbing or anything. It's just... unbelievably REAL.

and yeah, I too had never quite understood the Brian love until this show. In fact, his voice kiind of annoyed me on the Wild Part recording. Not gonna lie. But now I get it. Because he is just BRILLIANT. AND I love his voice now. It's sooo gorgeous live :)

Alice's performance is a lot more idiosyncratic. There's a little bit more of an inkling that a screw is loose in this version than there was before things were explained, so to speak, in the NYMF version.

And I agree, the way he just sits there and watches her leave is so moving.

I've fallen in love with prtty much the whole cast. One of my good friends got me hooked on Alice, so I knew I had to go see it. Brian totally does blow me away though ~ he and Alice both do.

I really just need to give yet another shout out to Aaron too. It's not even anything imparticular that he does really, but he's just SO good!! He's so incredibly graceful in the way he does things. Just the way he MOVES so easily- it's truly spirit-like, and I love watching him hover and watch everyone else. And like.. you REALLY understand where Diana's coming from in not wanting to let him go because, as a viewer, YOU really like him too. And I think that's such an important element of the show. If you don't have a good Gabe, there's this whole other layer of the show that's kind of missing because you don't really understand why she holds on to him for so long.

I could go on and on about this cast. It's so ridic. :)

He's also so much better. I think he's just more present, which gives it a bit more of a "supernatural" twist, but at the same time, that presence is very powerful, too. You're constantly aware of it. I guess that's also to the credit of the set design, though.
