A production named "Dr. Sex" here in Chicago is considering moving to Broadway. The following sections are from this morning's Chicago Sun Times.
Do you believe the statements are valid?
Personal opinion...The show's cute, but hardly Broadway material.
Best Regards,
Michael
"And why Broadway rather than the more suitable intimacy of an Off-Broadway house? Said Bortniker: "The general feeling is that it is easier to attract audiences to Broadway than to Off Broadway these days."
"He may be right. Consider the success of smaller Broadway musicals such as "Urinetown" and "Avenue Q." "Dr. Sex" (which features song titles such as "Swinging for Science") also may get an added boost from the slated June release of Bill Condon's new film about Kinsey, to star Liam Neeson and Laura Linney." 'Dr. Sex': from Bailiwick to Broadway
Well, actually, yes -- but I think that goes w/o saying. "Broadway" is a branding thing. It doesn't guarantee quality, certainly, but it has a certain cache. "We went to NYC & saw a BROADWAY show on our anniversary" vs. "We went to an experimental theatre in the basement of a church in Spanish Harlem on our anniversary." And that's just for the public. The press are also more willing to talk about Bway, but perhaps that is supply & demand...a chicken & egg thing maybe?

is it somehow related that Off-B'way tix are now appearing at TKTS?!?!?
Will: They don't give out awards for helping people be gay... unless you count the Tonys.
"I guarantee that we'll have tough
times. I guarantee that at some point
one or both of us will want to get out.
But I also guarantee that if I don't
ask you to be mine, I'll regret it for
the rest of my life..."
Why don't people just say, "I saw a fabulous show in New York!" and not bother to reference Broadway or Off? Don't people realize that the interesting stuff is rarely even happening on the "Great" White Way anymore?
Hear! Hear! But, they don't. Just like most people don't buy "no frills" brands even when a particular item is better than the "name brand". And, just like most of this board, even though we're all theatre lovers, tend to confine discussion Bway & not off-Bway shows. I'm sure you & I don't agree w/ that approach, but we recognize it.

don't you see that maybe some people think that the stuff on Broadway IS interesting? I don't get why some people around here have a problem with Broadway just being plain ENTERTAINMENT! oh well
