Umm...I haven't seen it, but from what I've heard it's completely different from any staging that has been done before. It has a whole new production team and has kind of been redone from scratch. There are a lot of projections used and I believe that is how they accomplish the helicopter affect as well. It sounds stupid but, the review I read said that it was non-the-less breathtaking. I'm sure they'll use lottsa smoke and lighting to make it worthwhile. I'd like to see it, just to see the production approached in a new way. Updated On: 3/3/04 at 08:11 PM

It is fricking awesome!! The helicoptor is interesting. It looks totally real, but it is a photo thing on the screen, and then they have the noise and some feature that makes it feel like it is right next to you. They did it really well, but I can't really explain it. Plus, the little boy is about the cutest thing ever, aside from Coalhouse III in our production of Ragtime.

If it's the same touring production that I covered in Philly this Fall...it is very, very good. I've only seen the show twice before (once on Bd'w with Salonga and once at the PaperMill with Kevin Gray, last year) so I can't compare sets, stageing too well. But the choeg. & sets are tight and great!

Their Kim was/is excellent as is/was their Engineer. Chris & John were a bit "pedestrain" at best. But the overall production is one of the best non-equity tours out there, imo. One of my non-eq. young friends Craig Laurie is with this tour. And yes! the projected helicopter scene is very impressive! Enjoy and post a review!

I saw the show in Vancouver in July. I hope you have a different cast than the one I saw. The lead female was no Lea Salonga, that's for sure...Jennifer Hubilla's voice was too thin (although some disagreed with me on this, saying this helped her character - how??). Alan Gillespie...meh. Standard voice. Jon Jon Briones as the Engineer - now HE stole the show (he played the role in London before too). Wallace Smith as John had a really soulful voice too. Too bad he's not in the show more. The helicopter is this video fit with strobe lights and the like. Not too shabby. I was expecting worse. The sets are beautiful though, but I was underwhelmed by the overall quality of the production.

Let us know what you thought though! If your expectations aren't too high, you might be pleasantly surprised! :)

PB...you know Craig too!! :) he's great...

For anyone wondering whether or not to see the current tour, I highly recommended it. I've seen MANY a NET and this is by far the best I have witnessed. I've seen the tour three times, twice in Baltimo/ once in Philly, and while the latter performance was a tad sloppy in some parts, it was nonetheless an effective and solid production. A Kim from Broadway, Jennifer Paz, actually gave up her Equity card for awhile to be in this tour. She's excellent, as is Karen Alvarez as Kim. I thought the weakest Kim was Jennifer Hubilla, who opened this tour as the main evening Kim.
