I'm able to buy a ticket for the opening night of a West End play in the coming week - will they let me into the reception with the celebrities and cast (you've seen those photos you see from the opening night party, you know what I'm talking about)? Or does one need an invitation? How does it work?? Thanks in advance!

For bigger productions, the reception is quite often off-site, not in the theatre directly. In my personal experience from the few press nights I have attended, there's added organisation in the theatre to take care of the press but regular tickets only cover the performance.

After parties are always invitation only, and usually the only way to get on the list is to have a connection to the show or be industry or be a celeb.

The ones held in theatres are easy to gatecrash, and that's basically the National, the Royal Court and sometimes the Old Vic (they vary between having after parties in-house and having them at the Ham Yard). West End are nearly always in private clubs or hotels since they don't usually have the space to have them in-house.
