Thanks, Phyllis. Like I said, it's been a while since I've read it and don't have my copy handy to check it. I just definitely remembered her connected in some way to one of those changes involving Cassie.
And commercially, I think she was right. A Chorus Line and its development are such a fascinating example of how to balance the (for lack of better terms) "artistic" and "commercial" aspects almost, IMHO, perfectly. I know that extremely gossipy book on Bennett (not the Mendalbaum one--the other one LOL whose name and author I can't remember) talked about Prince and Sondheim going to the show and complaining it sold out or something (the only person indirectly quoted on this though is Liz Smith who is used as a "source" for nearly all the more negative quotes in the book--for example she leaves out Mandelbaum's mention that Sondheim played at Bennett's memorial and cried.)
It was Marsha Mason. Either Marvin Hamlisch or Bob Avian tells that story in Every Little Step. When the Show was at the Public, Marsha Mason told Bennett that Cassie needed to be selected. Once they made that change, the story goes, the show got standing ovations every night.
