I loved RAGS too. I saw the production at the Bridewell Theatre in London in 2001, which was stunning.
Also loved JEKYLL & HYDE THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL
I play the CD of THE LIFE all the time - and I was privileged to hear Pamela Isaacs sing live with Cy Coleman at a concert in the Cardiff International Festival of Musical Theatre in October 2002. I chatted to her afterwards and she is not only a wonderful singer but also a lovely person.

I don't think that Phantom of the Opera is anywhere near the category of a "Guilty Pleasure" show. It has the largest fan base of any musical in musical theatre history, and was an instant hit with critics! I agree with you about 42nd Street, it's book isn't very engaging, but how could you not love it, hahaha?!?!?

Mamma Mia also has a large fan base- it still is a horrible musical. I take guilty pleasure to mean a show that you wouldn't admit to someone that you like even if you do. It's hard for me to admit that I like an Andrew Llyod Webber musical when I find most of his work trite and as everyone knows stolen. For that reason it is MY guilty pleasure.
Oh O.K. "bestofbroadway"....I understand your reasoning now, thanks for clearing that up!!!

"Hold up your head. Never be afraid to shine. Viva la difference in my body and my mind. All out with loneliness Such a waste of time. Come in from the outside" ~ Taboo
I don't think anything should feel guilty for loving a certain show. ANYTHING could be a guilty pleasure - because no one likes the same thing. It just doesn't make any sense to me at all. People like what they like.
There's a light in the darkness of everybody's life.
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

Your icon is my current "guilty pleasure" SOMMS, I always feel guilty about twenty minutes after I gaze at it:)! And I watched a video of DOTV the other night with some friends, we all agreed, worse that we remember but we wish it was still running! And STARMITES and CARRIE are my two, so bad I love'em pleasures of the 80's...
You've got to spread joy up to the maximum
Bring gloom down to the minimum
Have faith or pandemonium's
Liable to walk upon the scene
