The 77th Annual Tony Award Nominations for 2024 Apr 30
2024, 03:18:14 PM
Let me echo the disappointment in the Hell’s Kitchen love. The cast is incredible and I understand (most of) their nominations. But Book and Direction and a few of their others have me shaking my head.
Heres hoping The Outsiders is the victor of the season

I saw this over the weekend and was very underwhelmed. I felt like everything that happened in this show could’ve happened in a 30 minute scene. I was so bored and wasn’t invested at all. I don’t think this is the fault of the cast. Rachel is giving a wonderful performance, as are her scene partners. I think it comes down to the writing and direction. I’m no stranger to intimate thought provoking theatre, but this was so dull and boring that I couldn’t wait to le

Caught this show this week and was extremely disappointed. This is the worst show of the season. The set design is awful/non existent. The few pieces they did bring on looked extremely cheap and ugly. The costumes were also unappealing and cheap. The lighting was fine, I guess. The sound mix was terrible and it was often hard to hear the vocals over the orchestra unless they were really in their most powerful range. The choreo was all over the place and never really thrilled me, which made Br

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would, but it is kind of a convoluted mess at times.
The set design is really great and everything was very smooth and clear.
The costume design was a miss for me - nothing was cohesive. Sometimes we were in period styles, sometimes we weren’t.
The score has its moments! The styles of music seemed a little all over the place, but it results in a lot of cool numbers. I really enjoyed Natalie Joy Johnson’s act II nu

Finally getting around to writing some of my unorganized thoughts!
The Good: The cast is superb! Shoshana and Maleah are giving incredible central performances. Really the whole cast sounds amazing and the dancing is very impressive. The set design works well and was very functional for the story. Lighting design - Natasha Katz can do no wrong. Costumes were fine, sound mix was great - though sometimes it was hard to really get the lyrics of the soloist when the ensemb

I hear you on difference of opinion - if you don’t like the sound, you don’t like the sound. However, calling it Strain is not an opinion. It’s true that pedagogy is pedagogy and what Cynthia is doing is a healthy, complex, and intentional technique that a lot of people can’t do. As for her not doing the traditional riff? Eh, people will probably get over it when they see the performance and how she acts it. I can’t wait to find out!

It’s definitely not strained. It was absolutely intentional. Why would they use a clip of her straining to hit a note? It sounds great. I also disagree that that riff has to be clean. Elphaba is PISSED. That riff is literally called Elphaba’s War Cry. Some grow

I’m really surprised by all the hate this trailer is getting on here. I thought it looked stunning!
CGI does not surprise me or turn me away. It’s OZ - a world full of magic. CGI is expected. Based on all the sets they built, I’m guessing we’ll get a nice balance of CGI for huge moments and natural work on set for other moments. Hard to judge this over only one minute of footage
As for the comments on Erivo’s “strained” singing. Ther

NY City Center Encores 2024 season: ONCE UPON A MATTRESS with Sutton Foster (adapted by Amy Sherman-Palladino), JELLY'S LAST JAM, and TITANIC Jan 25

I don’t think Foster is miscast here. In fact, I was so excited to see her because I thought it is finally a role she’s right for. I just think that vocally she was holding back, and the material calls for stronger volume. Her comedy really is great. There’s a moment that is very “Show Off” and she’s clearly having a blast.

This was all just okay. Sutton really let me down with “Shy”. I’m not saying everything needs to be belted all the time, but volume is literally the joke in this song. We literally have the ensemble leaning away from her on each high note cuz she’s supposed to be loud. It didn’t work. Felt like she was holding back. Where’s the girl that gave us Gimme Gimme?! I will give her credit in her comedy chops and she seemed to be having a blast. The evening has is

Apparently Wicked was only like 10 days away from finishing. Given the size of the role, I can imagine Ethan might’ve been wrapped already.

I went over the weekend and am surprised to have many different reactions to a lot of these posts. The show is funny and the cast is talented, and that’s all I really need from a revival of Spamalot.
The Good: Kritzer, Slater, Killam, Script Updates, Orchestra, and Ensemble.
Kritzer is the one making the most original choices and making the role her own, compared to the rest of the cast. Slater is hilarious and his physical comedy is top notch. Killam’s Lancelot is g
