DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES - Opening Night Critics' Reviews  Feb 4 2024, 12:10:27 AM

Finally had the chance to catch this tonight. Strange, haunting, and challenging. But also one of the most unique and rewarding pieces I've seen on Broadway in quite a while.

I can see how people would describe this as a song cycle in a play because it doesn't quite work as a book musical. Once I stopped trying to view it as a book musical, though I started to see the themes (musical or otherwise) emerge.

This show will not be for everyone, and I'm not surprised that

Here Lies Love Rush  Aug 10 2023, 01:51:09 AM

There are some recent reports on Reddit, including mine, here: https://reddit.com/r/Broadway/s/P3AZoS4r1a

Someone on the Here Lies Love Reviews thread also stated that they got standing floor rush tickets about 10 minutes before the 8/6 Sunday evening show.

All tickets for recent reports were offered at $35

HERE LIES LOVE Reviews  Aug 6 2023, 11:55:34 PM

I saw tonight's show (Sunday 8/6). Lea and Conrad were out, which was a huge bummer for me, as they were the two actors I was most looking forward to seeing. The primary DJ was also out.

I saw the show from Floorside 2, Seat B13, which is second row floorside, house left, all the way to the front. You definitely felt close to the action but also strangely detached (particularly with some partial view scenes, like the beauty pageant). I wonder if my seat placement affected my

Cue the confetti. In this club setting, this show needs a better send-off. I’d suggest some sort of remix a la Six."

For anyone that's curious, here are what the bows looked like pre- and post-reprise cut:

I can understand the reason for the cuts, but the new send-off is definitely awkward.

Encores! 2023: LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA with Ruthie Ann Miles, DEAR WORLD with Donna Murphy, and OLIVER!  Jun 26 2023, 06:13:37 PM

BCfitasafiddle said: "Any word on if Victoria Clark went to the final Sunday evening performance? I know Kelli had posted they planned on going together before Kelli had to go out of town this weekend."

I can't directly answer your question, but I can confirm that after Sunday's Kimberly Akimbo performance (which I attended), Victoria Clark rushed out the stage door without signing any autographs and was dressed up to go to an event.

Encores! 2023: LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA with Ruthie Ann Miles, DEAR WORLD with Donna Murphy, and OLIVER!  Jun 25 2023, 12:59:00 AM

I was at tonight's performace. What a truly special evening; it's been a while since I felt so transported by a piece of theater.  All the actors are bringing such honesty to their roles that the piece really comes alive. Some thoughts that came to mind:

  • My previous exposure to this musical was simply through the cast recording and the Live from Lincoln Center PBS broadcast. While I knew that a live performance would be special, I underestimated how glorious the&n

I've sat in the balcony many times, and I personally try to avoid sitting further back than Row F.  Beyond that row, it becomes increasingly challenging to make out facial expressions and diction.

King James  May 8 2023, 12:24:26 AM

I saw tonight's preview. I was encouraged to see it after reading several reviews about the play being a thoughtful exploration of male friendship. I was also aware of a few critics' grumblings that some issues raised during the play (especially those around race) were left unresolved. After seeing the show, I can say that both viewpoints are valid. Though, my takeaway was that what could be interpreted as the show's "weaknesses" are mostly indicative of shortcomings in

And not that it necessarily means something, but between this andZachary Stewart's God of Carnage review, this is the second off-Broadway revival review from Theatremania in two weeks where the underlying thesis seems to be "this well-liked property wasn't any good in the first place".
"

To be fair, many of my friends who've seen this production- and myself included- walked away thinking, "Wow, Oliver! is surprisingly not a great show."

The production is wonderful, but it lays bare the show's weaknesses.
"

I saw today's matinee with a friend, neither of us familiar with the piece. Both of us came out of the show commenting how weak the book is and how poorly the musical has aged.

All the actors seemed to put their all into what is clearly an imperfect piece. Raul's performance was especially lived in, though his lack of strong diction -- a previous poster used the word "mumbled" -- particularly as the show went on, made it very difficult to hear what he was saying/singing half the time (at least from the balcony). Lilli Cooper was beautiful in voice. Benjamin Pajak was pitch perfect and brought all the earnestness required of him. And the orchestra, elevated onstage, sounded fantastic.

Glad I got to see this, but I'm not sure I really need to revisit Oliver! again anytime soon...

Uggghh, of course City Center releases the discount code for Access City Center Club less than an hour after I bought full priced tickets.  sad How easy do y'all think it would be to sell my Encores tickets secondhand at face value if I was thinking of buying additional/replacement tickets with the discount code?  Or maybe I should just count my losses and move on?

Flying Over Sunset - Previews Thread  Dec 11 2021, 12:00:54 PM

My friend and I sat in D106 and D107, and sight lines were decent. I seem to recall earlier in the thread that the 500 seats had views blocked in Act 2 during the scene when the fog machine was used. I can confirm that we could see just fine during that scene.

The Grant character dances on both stage left and right, so I don't think it makes much difference (and the solo part of the tap is on an elevated surface so you'll be able to see regardless). Carmen sings the title song

Flying Over Sunset - Previews Thread  Dec 7 2021, 10:57:35 PM

I saw the show on Friday night but am just getting the chance to write about it now. Like many of you, I really wanted to like this show, but I left disappointment by how much potential was left untapped.

I actually thought Act 1 was pretty interesting, if not a bit slow.  I particularly liked the Act 1 closer (also the reprise of the title song) with

Six heading to Broadway  Nov 25 2019, 09:35:50 PM

I was purchasing tickets tonight for one of the St. Paul performances, and I noticed that Mallory Maedke will be filling in for Abby Mueller for the duration of the run.  A note on the Ordway's website reads, "Abby Mueller, who was previously announced to play Jane Seymour at the Ordway, will no longer perform during this engagement due to recuperation from an injury."  I'll definitely miss being able to see Abby perform, but I hope for her quick recovery

Oklahoma! lottery  Nov 9 2019, 11:42:07 PM

FYI for those considering the Oklahoma! lottery these days: The lottery loser emails still come with an option to buy $59.50 tickets but sans a lottery loser code.  In other words, there's no way to avoid the Telecharge fees by buying lottery loser seats at the box office.

That being said, the box office agents at Circle in the Square are some of the nicest agents I've interacted with at any Broadway theater.  They should be able to match the $59.50 price at

Hamilton Lottery Philadelphia  Oct 24 2019, 08:39:00 AM

For those entering the Philly Hamilton lottery, one thing to consider are the lottery loser seats.  If you enter the lottery via LuckySeat (NOT the Hamilton app) and don't win, your notification email will oftentimes include a link to buy $49 tickets (inclusive of fees!) for any open seat in the theater.  The $49 tickets are usually only available for Sunday evening and Tuesday-Thursday shows, with the best seats available on Tuesday evenings.&n

Awesome, thanks.  I know the code you posted was publicly-available (and shareable), so I'd love to hear about any update you get.

All My Sons Previews  Apr 7 2019, 08:02:54 PM
I saw this afternoon's matinee. For context: This is the first live performance I've seen of any Arthur Miller play. I was introduced to Miller's writing in high school, when I read The Crucible, but I absolutely fell in love with his plays when I started reading more of them while serving on a play reading committee a couple of years back. While I consider All My Sons to be among his most approachable works, I never quite found it to be up to the level of his other plays, writing-wise. I was ho
Laura Benanti to replace Lauren Ambrose in MY FAIR LADY  Oct 22 2018, 08:13:26 PM
I was also one of the lottery winners for Halloween day, but I "unfortunately" won an evening performance ticket. I live in Delaware, so an evening performance is pretty much out of the question for me unless I plan to take 1.5 days off of work or arrive at work on Thursday insanely tired (though, the chance to see Laura Benanti is a huge temptation). If anyone won a matinee ticket and is willing to swap, PM me before 12 noon tomorrow!
