(09/30/2013) - Tick, tick... BOOM!, a rock musical, is an autobiographical tale of a young composer on the brink of turning 30 and falling into oblivion. Red Branch Theatre Company presents the show now through October 13, 2013. Three actors portray ten characters through fourteen songs to take the audience on the playwright/composer's journey that ignited an interest in Jonathan Larson's work and ultimately led to Broadway sensation, RENT. Larson originally began performing the piece as a solo work in 1990. Following his death in 1996, playwright David Auburn revised the work and adapted it for three actors. (09/06/2013) - The 2013 New York International Fringe Festival's Producing Artistic Director Elena K. Holy announced this year's recipients of the festival's Overall Excellence Awards on August 25 at a ceremony held at the New York night club The Cutting Room. An independent panel of over 40 theater professionals selected the winners from among the festival's 185 entrants. Among those 185 shows was The Young Olympians and the Most Amazingly Awesome Adventure Ever produced by Maryland Ensemble Theatre's family theatre, The Fun Company. (06/25/2013) - Maryland Ensemble Theatre (MET) presents I Am (Not) My Mother, based on true stories from and about the women of Frederick. Written by Suzanne Beal and directed by MET Associate Artistic Director Gene Fouche the show made its World Premiere on the MET stage last July to extremely positive reviews and audience response. DC Metro Theatre Arts gave the original production four stars and Charlie Smith emplored, 'everyone go now', in his review for Want2Dish. Since the World Premiere last year the show has received new productions in Baltimore and in Philadelphia (Society Hill Playhouse). Given the tremendously positive response the play has received the Maryland Ensemble Theatre is bringing the show back for a limited run, July 12 through 21 at MET. (06/21/2013) - Everyman Theatre closes its historic 2012/13 season with a staging of the rarely produced comedic gem, The Beaux' Stratagem. Founding Artistic Director Vincent M. Lancisi directs the production, which features a large cast of 15 actors and includes Resident Company Members Megan Anderson, Clinton Brandhagen and Bruce Randolph Nelson. (05/03/2013) - Everyman Theatre continues its season of award-winning Baltimore Premieres with the 2002 Pulitzer Prize-winning Topdog/Underdog by Suzan-Lori Parks, now playing through May 19th, 2013. In Laugh Station: Revelation, a mysterious stranger arrives aboard Laugh Station preaching a message of peace, harmony and everlasting life. Soon enough, the entire crew has been brainwashed into joining a futuristic space cult! All hell breaks loose (literally) when the cult splits into two factions who want to annihilate each other. (01/07/2013) - Performances for the upcoming national tour of FLASHDANCE - THE MUSICAL, the stage adaptation of the 1983 hit film that defined a generation, begin January 1st and run through January 6 at Pittsburgh's Heinz Hall. At a recent press event, Mayor Luke Ravenstahl officially announced January 1st as FLASHDANCE day. Following the Pittsburgh engagement, FLASHDANCE will embark on a national tour to more than 25 cities in the next seven months with additional bookings to be announced soon.
