Leslie Malin Elected Vice President of Shakespeare Theatre Association

By:

Cheasapeake Shakespeare Company's Managing Director, Lesley Malin, was elected Vice President of the Shakespeare Theatre Association at the 2011 conference held in Boulder, Colorado this January.  This position puts her in line to become the association's President in 2012, leading the annual conference to be held in Seattle, Washington.

The Shakespeare Theatre Association, established in 1991 annually gathers organizations dedicated to the production of the plays of William Shakespeare. Organizations such as Shakespeare's Globe in London, Shakespeare and Company in Massachusetts, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Utah Shakespeare Festival and Canada's Stratford Festival come together to share artistic visions and practical strategies.  Now attended by over 125 companies from across the world, each conference features an address from dynamic leaders such as Adrian Noble, former artistic director of the Royal Shakespeare Company and former NEA Chairman, Dana Gioia.

Lesley Malin, whose success as Managing Director of Chesapeake Shakespeare Company has been marked by several recent articles including American Theatre Magazine's November issue, has been cited as a driving force behind Chesapeake Shakespeare Company's tremendous success. She is excited to begin planning the STA conference in 2012. While serving as treasurer for STA from 2007-2009, she established a firm relationship with the current officers. As Vice President, she will assist Patrick Spottiswoode of Shakespeare's Globe in London, current STA President, in organizing next year's conference to be held in Orlando.

The Shakespeare Theatre Association members range from large and long established Equity companies to non-Equity and university-affiliated festivals.  This association's mission to bridge the gap between scholarship and production is a familiar path for Malin who strives to make Shakespeare accessible to all audiences. With the announcement of her future role as President of STA, The Baltimore/DC community can be assured to benefit from the wealth of expertise associated with this global Shakespearean network.
