J. Buck Jabaily will be leading a seminar in devised work at Single Carrot Theatre.

After teaching a six-week scene study class in the Fall of 2010 at Single Carrot Theatre, founding Artistic Director J. Buck Jabaily will be leading a two- month weekly seminar in devised work at the theatre. "There's this misconception out there that only one or two people in theatre really get to be creative. Or that only one person gets to be ‘in charge'. In the realm of devised work, the typical hierarchy is discarded, and the creative driver of a new piece of theatre can shift from one artist to another, "says Buck Jabaily. His directorial credits at Single Carrot Theatre include Shakespeare's Richard III, Sarah Kane's Crave, Henrik Ibsen's The Wild Duck, Will Eno's Tragedy: a tragedy, and Gao Xingjian's The Other Shore; the latter incorporating elements of ensemble-devised movement and text.

The class parallels Single Carrot Theatre's season- ending production, which has already begun rehearsals and will be fully created by the company's ensemble over a period of 10 months. The ensemble hopes to include all aspects of production in the process and that notion is reflected in the seminar leader's view of his class as well, "In American theatre today, we have a generally playwright centered approach. Although many playwrights might disagree, at the end of the day, it is the playwright who begins the creative act that will end up on stage."

"Devising work is an art form in itself", says Education and Outreach Director Giti Jabaily, "It takes an incredibly well rounded theatre artist to create a strong piece of devised work. We have a variety of workshops and classes for different people this season. The Devised Work Seminar is a great opportunity for actors, directors, writers, and designers who like to challenge themselves and explore what theatre is and can be. It is a chance to bring each artist's unique perspective to the work."
Classes begin September 11 and are held Sunday evenings though October. Email gjabaily@singlecarrot.com for more information.
