CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:

All Characters except Jeff require proper British accents. (not Cockney)

Justin Fogg: (30-40) the solicitor who assists Carla. Reserved but likeable. He has a slightly romantic side as well as a business-like side.

Carla/Caroline Crale: (28-35) This actress plays both daughter and mother characters. Trim, determined, articulate. Carla seeks to prove her mother's innocence in the face of great resistance. Tthe actress should possess a confident quality for Carla as well as a nervous, but pleasant side for Caroline.

Amyas Crale: (40 to 50) The Victim. A successful painter usually more obsessed with his current painting and/or current model than being a good husband and father. Grumpy, disagreeable but has his own charming qualities. Open to all physical types, but must possess a confident, somewhat-attractive quality.

Jeff Rogers: (28-40)Canadian (no specific dialect requirement). Fiancée to Carla, slightly insensitive quality. Boisterous, friendly, preferably a larger-framed person, but open to all physical types. A Canadian Cowboy-type, but without a southern American twang).

Elsa: (24-35) Very attractive, trim, comfortable wearing shorts and a bathing suit-type top. She is Amyas Crale's model. The actress must be able to convey both a young, spirited, insolent young lady as well as a very reserved, slightly sad, older-Elsa, now "Lady Melksham". A very brave, but rather dislikeable character.

Meredith Blake: (40-60) Slightly vague, pleasant. He gives the impression of being ineffectual or irresolute. A Countryman of sorts who has a passion for mixing home remedies or 'potions'.

Phillip Blake: (40-60) Meredith's more level-headed brother. He's not a friendly person. More businesslike than his brother. Self-important with a trace of nervous irritability.

Miss Williams: (35-65) A very capable, efficient "tartar" of a woman. Very disciplined and proper Nanny to Angela. She is devoted to Caroline Crale but not a fan of Amyas Crale. (Think of a stereotypical "very-British" Nanny who hasn't time for any foolishness...a stricter Mary Poppins?)

Turnball: (70+) An elderly Clerk

Angela: (18-32) Caroline's younger sister. Younger version of character is a slightly bratty teenager ("A girl with spirit"). Older version is an extremely accomplished explorer and writer. She is self-assured, smart and confident. Needs to be able to play a convincing late-teenager as well a 30-something age range.)
