In collaboration with arts and culture institutions throughout Baltimore, the Chesapeake Shakespeare Company's Maryland premiere of "Red Velvet" by Lolita Chakrabarti includes free public events in the community.

"Red Velvet" at the Walters Art Museum

February 1, 2018 (Thursday) 6:30pm-7:15pm

In the galleries where The Walters displays a magnificent bust of Othello and a painting of the 19th-century actor Ira Aldridge, Chesapeake Shakespeare Company actors will present pop-up performances of scenes from plays including Red Velvet and Othello.

"Ira's Shakespeare Dream: Original Illustrations by Floyd Cooper"

February 5, 2018 through May 27, 2018. (Central Library hours)

Opening Reception: February 7, 2018 (Wednesday) 6:30pm and 7:15pm talk by Floyd Cooper

The Enoch Pratt Free Library exhibits illustrations from the children's book, Ira's Shakespeare Dream, by Glenda Armand and illustrated by award-winning artist Floyd Cooper, in the Carla D. Hayden Wing of the Central Library. The book tells the story of Ira Aldridge, an African-American trailblazer who was a 19th Century Shakespearean actor. Armand and Cooper are coming to Baltimore to visit schools and will be at the opening reception, Cooper will discuss his art.

Who was Ira Aldridge? Drawing on the resources of the Folger Shakespeare Library and a half-dozen galleries and collections around the world, Chesapeake Shakespeare Company presents an exhibit of playbills and images of the first African-American actor to achieve international renown.
