Baltimore Open Theatre, CityLit Present a Discussion With Andrea Tompa, 3/9

CityLit Project partners with the new Baltimore Open Theatre for its first public event, which features Hungarian theater critic and writer Andrea Tompa.

Tompa will talk about the political situation in Hungary and how the country’s shift towards nationalism is threatening the Hungarian theatre, as well as Freedom of Speech in Hungary as a whole. With a trend towards nationalism and a surge in extremism occurring worldwide, Hungary’s now fledgling democracy is making headlines all over the world. The right-wing Hungarian majority government, elected in 2010 with a mandate that gives them the authority to change laws at will, is stripping the basic tenants of democracy at a rapid rate.?Now, the government is waging war on the country’s arts leaders and institutions, particularly writers and those in the theater.

The discussion will be led by Barbara Lanciers, a Baltimore Open Theatre board member. Andrea and Barbara and will be joined via Skype by Philip Arnoult, co-founder of Baltimore Open Theatre, who will be in Hungary on March 9 at a theatre festival.
