
MUSIC HALL to Receive $40,000 Grant from the National Endowment for the ArtsMay 10, 2018National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Jane Chu has approved more than $80 million in grants as part of the NEA's second major funding announcement for fiscal year 2018. Included in this announcement is an Art Works grant of $40,000 to the Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts, to support an increase in interactive activities that engage Detroit audiences with performers from each of Music Hall's four programmatic Series: Family Theatre, which engages children and families with staged versions of classic stories; World Cultures, which represents and reaches out to our region's culturally diverse population; Contemporary Dance, which connects our region with new work from the forefront of the field; and Music -- which speaks for itself. These series reflect Music Hall's unusually broad spectrum of audiences, including Metro Detroit's richly diverse cultural groups and with a particular focus on access for students and families from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Film Composer David Newman, Film Writer Jon Burlingame and Director Dean Parisot Give Master Class at Orange County School of the ArtsMay 9, 2018Conductor and Composer David Newman is known for creating the music for nearly 100 films, including "Serenity" (2005), "Ice Age" (2002), "Anastasia" (1997), "Matilda" (1996) and many others. He comes from a dynasty of composers, the Newman family being the most nominated for Academy Awards, all 92 for film scoring, arrangement or original song. Jon Burlingame is the nation's leading writer on the subject of music for film and television, and has recently written about the composers and scores in "Phantom Thread," "Black Panther" and "Star Trek: Discovery." He is a lecturer at the University of Southern California, a best-selling author and a regular writer for Variety magazine. Dean Parisot is a film and television director who has recently worked on shows such as "Santa Clarita Diet," "Grace and Frankie" and the pilot for the new NBC dramedy "Good Girls."
