Brian Michaels got his start in radio at the age of 15 back in 1989. The early 90s saw a move to Moorhead, MN (Fargo, ND) for school and more radio opportunities. Brian found his niche in 1997 when he started a brand new weekly radio show called The A cappella Hour. Over the past 30 years Brian built up his knowledge and contacts in the a cappella world, as well as his CD collection (over 5000 a cappella CDs). Brian has been a judge at the Denver and Chicago Harmony Sweepstakes competition numerous times as well as a judge and nominator for the CARA’s (Contemporary A Cappella recording Awards) as well as serving as the Midwest regional Ambassador for CASA (The Contemporary A Cappella Society). Brian’s yearly holiday radio special “Holiday Harmonies: an a cappella Christmas” has been heard around the country. Brian grew up watching his sister and friends perform on stage, as well as all 3 of his own children. Brian has been involved in the local theatre community for oalmost 20 years and in 2019 launched a new podcast focusing on the local theatre scene. This podcast was called Stage Notes with Brian Michaels.

Barnesville High School was lucky enough to get the local premier of the Broadway smash hit! This is the very first production in the brand new auditorium at Barnesville. The show was originally planned for March, but they pushed it back to make sure their beautiful new home was ready.
For those not familiar with the story, Noises Off is a 1982 play by Michael Frayn. This is a three-act show and each Act hilariously shows us how a play comes together or at least try to get through ONE ACT. Act one shows the final dress rehearsal before the play opens. Act 2 shows a matinee performance about a month later, but in a twist, we see the performance from back stage. Act 3 is a performance near the end of the run. Mix in a few love triangles, fights and wonderful physical and you get a recipe for fun.
Set in 1962, the show tells the fictional story of two West Virginia brothers and their friends, who are jolted by news that the mine where their fathers were killed a decade earlier will be reopened.
A play based on the beloved 1962 best selling book from author Madeleine L'Engle. This tells the story of Meg Murry, Charles Wallace Murry and Calvin O'Keefe, as they embark on a journey through time and space to save the Murrys' father.
The original musical written by Patrick Kasper is back on stage again! This shorter version (about 1 hour and 10 minutes) was put on by the Grand Forks Central kids. This fun and family friendly show will hopefully be on many more stages in the future. I know Patrick would like to get this on as many stages as possible.
I started off my last review with this same message. Fargo Public Schools needs to let these kids have more than one weekend for their shows. Read our BWW critic's review.
When the Shanley Players first announced that they were to present The Lightning Thief, I was very intrigued. This musical is adapted from the book The Lightning Thief written by Rick Riordan. I have personally never read the books, but my kids were all huge fans. I did, however, see the movies with my kids when they came out. Knowing this was a new musical for me, I purposely did not listen to any of the songs before hand. As far as I can tell, this is the local premier of this show.
The play Radium Girls is inspired by a tragic true story. The story follows some of the girls who unknowingly were poisoned by Radium while working in a factory in New Jersey.
This might be the first time this show has been done locally, but it's definitely the first time I have seen it. This beautiful show was created by Steve Martin & Edie Brickell. The story is based on a true event, not a true story.
Fargo Davies High School Theatre Presents Grease! Rebecca Saari once again hits one out of the park. I can honestly say this is the best stage version I have ever seen. There are some real stars on that stage. The singing, the choreography, the Pit Orchestra, the set and everything in between are all top notch.
Elf The Musical is based on the hit 2003 Will Ferrell movie that fast became a holiday classic. The musical made it's Broadway debut in 2003. Elf tells the story of Buddy Hobbs who was raised by Elves at the North Pole and goes on a journey to find his real dad.
The Shanley Players Present - Check Please If you are looking for a fun way to spend an evening you should head over to Shanley High School tonight (Saturday Dec 4th) and check out this HILARIOUS One Act Play. This play was the #1 most produced high school short play for 16 seasons in a row.
Rebecca Meyer-Larson and her talented students from Moorhead High bring the story of the infamous outlaws Bonnie and Clyde to the stage. This is the first time this musical has been performed in the area. A friendly warning that it may not be suitable for young children, as the show includes violence, mature language and simulated gun shots.
Directors Tom and Rachel Gillen help bring this modern twist on the Grimm Fairy Tales to life on the stage at Fargo North High School. This Tony Award winning musical made it Broadway debut in 1987. Into The Woods has seen numerous revivals as well as a 2014 Hollywood movie starring Meryl Streep, Anna Kendrick, Chris Pine, James Corden and more.
The musical of Sweeney Todd first hit Broadway in 1979. This haunting musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim is a modern classic. The horrid story of a vengeful barber who assists her partner in getting some special ingredients for her famous meat pies.
Bryce Henrickson and his team are back this summer with another production. This year they decided to let their Freak Flags Fly and bring the cast and crew to Duloc.
