Review: XANADU at Fargo Moorhead Community Theatre

Director Hardy Koenig took us back to the 80's, 1980 to be exact, in the FMCT adaptation of XANADU. The show is based on the book and motion picture (Starring Olivia Newton John).

This local production featured a small cast (9) and a small pit (4) but that was all they needed to tell the story of Sonny Malone, a depressed artist on Venice Beach. Sonny meets a mysterious woman who inspires him.

This was a fun show complete with roller skates and even a special appearance by Pegasus the Winged Horse that had me laughing nonstop.

Kathryn Tyler was amazing as Kira/Clio/Kitty and transitioned from 3 different accents with ease. She was channeling Olivia Newton John with her Australian accent.

Paul Hartmann II as Sonny Malone was a joy. This was my first time seeing Paul on stage, but will definitely not be my last. His interactions with Kathryn were fun and his facial expressions were priceless.

Clayton Perala as Danny Maguire was so much fun. Danny was one of my favorite characters in this production and Paul is the reason, I sure do hope to see more of him also.

The actresses (and actor) who played the sisters (and multiple other roles) all made this show so entertaining. From the singing, dancing & comedy it was such a joy.

Jessica Thompson (Melpomene) & Tanya Weets (Calliope) both stood out as the jealous sisters plotting against Clio. Nicholas Schons (Thalia) fit right in with the ladies.

Overall this show was a blast. I was singing along to familiar songs, laughing out loud, and even my 11 year old daughter loved the show. You still have a few chances to see this production and I highly recommend it.
