BWW Previews: Movie Trailer Drops for CRAZY RICH ASIANS Based on the Best Selling Book by Kevin KwanApril 25, 2018book by Kevin Kwan. The movie is already making major waves because it's the first all-Asian cast in more than two decades, and long overdue.
The movie stars Henry Golding in his first movie role as Nick Young and Constance Wu (Fresh Off the Boat) as Rachel Chu. The story revolves around Nick wanting to take his girlfriend to meet his family in Singapore, but he never tells her that he's insanely rich and that everyone in Singapore will be gunning to break them up upon their arrival. The book was hailed as a modern-day Jane Austen spin on upperclass life and spawned two sequels, CHINA RICH GIRLFRIEND and RICH PEOPLE PROBLEMS.

BWW Review: SKY IN THE DEEP by Adrienne YoungApril 24, 2018There aren't a lot of fiction novels set during humanity's earliest days, especially in YA. The first, and perhaps only, to spring to mind are Julie Eshbaugh's excellent Ivory and Bone duology, set in prehistoric times and full of clans, sabertooth tigers, and wooly mammoths, and Lesley Livingston's THE VALIANT, set in the time of Julius Caesar and gladiators. With shows like The History Channel's Vikings and the BBC's The Last Kingdom (Based on the Saxon Chronicles by Bernard Cornwell) becoming wildly popular, the genre is starting to bring its A-game to the dinner table in the form of books. This month, readers are lucky to see the release of not one but TWO novels centered around vikings, BEYOND A DARKENED SHORE by Jessica Leake (available now!) and SKY IN THE DEEP by Adrienne Young (available tomorrow, 4/24!). Having read IVORY AND BONE and now SKY IN THE DEEP, I've discovered I'm really intrigued by historical fiction about our long-forgotten past and am now excited to read BEYOND A DARKENED SHORE, which adds some Norse mythology into its mix.

BWW Review: ATLAS FALLEN by Jessica PierceApril 17, 2018I've never been a huge sci-fi reader, but books like ATLAS FALLEN by Jessica Pierce make me want to go out and read all the sci-fi. Pierce's debut novel is like CINDER meets Big Hero 6. You have illegal bot fighting and a prince who must choose a bride in three days and a girl who is great at creating and building from scraps and metal. It's not a retelling, but it has a Cinderella flair to it. I was super engaged and had a lot of trouble putting this one down--I'm already ready for the sequel in the Cyber Crown series!

BWW Review: BRAZEN: Rebel Ladies Who Rocked the World by Pénélope BagieuApril 5, 2018In a time where people are speaking out and not letting anyone stop them or bring them down, it is more important than ever to find the trailblazers of the past and make your own path into the future. History repeats itself. Over the centuries, women and their rights and ideas have been squashed time and again. Yet there are always a few women so confident in themselves and what they want that they push back against society and carve their own path in life. They are heroes, idols, and people that we don't always hear about because history doesn't venerate them and teach their stories to young people. Times are finally changing, and so many books are now being published that celebrate women and teach young girls to be proud of being female.
BWW Review: ARU SHAH AND THE END OF TIME by Roshani ChokshiApril 3, 2018The series starter ARU SHAH AND THE END OF TIME came out last week and I'm so happy to say it didn't disappoint! I was enamored with the world-building and the characters and have already been introduced to so much new mythology! It also feels like a great new series to recommend to kids who couldn't get enough of the Percy Jackson series. There's only so much I can give them in the children's department, and I love that ARU SHAH had all the humor, all the emphasis on friendship, and, of course, all the fun real-world questing that the Percy books have.

BWW Review: EMERGENCY CONTACT by Mary H.K. ChoiMarch 19, 2018It's like Choi peered down into the lives of Sam and Penny, pulled out a few months of their life, and shared them with the world. Sam and Penny are so awkward, and feel so very, very human. A good portion of the book is told through texting because of their unusual relationship and that text-speak feels so realistic. It talks about mundane things such as the love of Pringles and whether or not Harry Potter should be re-read and whether a documentary about the life of a cat would be a good idea or not. The texts are a mix of fantastic grammar and the everyday way we send things without capitalization or periods. Sometimes, there's even shorthand. The shorthand is minimal, though, which makes it so much easier to read and get through. Especially since Penny is a writer and prefers to write with grammar, which Sam picks up on right away, and he starts spelling things out much more with her! I'm not a huge epistolary reader and struggle to get through books with texts, emails, letters, etc. EMERGENCY CONTACT used it so naturally that I didn't have that problem this time around and felt it only enhanced the relationship between the two.
