Tito sacrifices his love to the will of the people. He separates from his lover, the Jewess of Berenice, and is ready to take a Roman noblewoman of the wife.

1 Act
Vitellia, the daughter of the deposed Emperor Vitellio, has claims to the throne. You are attempting to make Sesto, a friend of the Emperor, submissive as a tool of their will. She promises him her favor, if it succeeded him, to kill the emperor. Sesto, swaying agreed between the friendship to the Emperor and love for Vitellia, to join the conspiracy of the lentulo spiral and dare the assassination.
Annio, a young patrician, reported the adoption of Berenice. As Vitellia offers new hope and commandeth Sesto to postpone the fact once again. Annio, asked his friend Sesto to consent to the wedding with his sister Servilia.
The nobility of Rome on Capitol Hill gathered to Tito's Crown. The new emperor but determined the gift offered to represent him alleviate the distress of the victims of the recent outbreak of the Vesuvius. To draw Sesto with his friendship, he wants to raise his sister Servilia Empress. To promote virtue and friendship, he considered sense his reign.
Annio is willing to defer to the wishes of the Emperor, opened his bride Servilia, that she had been chosen by Tito to wife. She however will not add reaffirms her love for Annio and confesses her love for Annio, whereupon this generous waived her hand and even the happiness of love to justify Tito.
Vitellia, which has meanwhile become aware of the intended survey of Servilias Empress, feel their pride hurt and Sesto is pushing anew to act. Reluctantly, this can persuade, finally making the stop. But hardly is it broken, Vitellia learns of the new plan of Tito's, now even to the wife to elect them.
The uprising of the lentulo spiral has begun. In vain, Vitellia strives to halt him. Fate takes its course. The Capitol is ablaze and mourning the people trying to save himself. Sesto returns to the conviction, to have killed Tito. All lament the death of the benevolent ruler.

2 Act
The desperate Sesto, Annio reported that the Emperor in the turmoil had remained intact. Another had been taken by the dagger of the assassin. Now, Sesto confesses his guilt. Vitellia urges him to hurry escape while Annio advises to rely on the grace of the emperor.
Publio arrested Sesto as the proven Assassin. He now realizes that he accidentally hit his Mitverschworenen lentulo spiral, who himself had triumphantly already adorned with the coronation robe, dagger.
By happy coincidence Tito entronnene the death of is his people and looking after the fire of the city whose suffering to alleviate. The Senate has spoken the death sentence of Sesto, the Emperor but is reluctant to sign the judgment. He wants to speak alone with the friend who betrayed him. Sesto not reveals the secret of his deed. He is ready to die. Although the silence of his guilty friend him remains a mystery, Tito decides to repeal the death sentence.
Vitellia, assailed by Servilias request, but finally decides to save Sesto through a confession. Remorseful, she throws the emperor at the foot. Tito is betrayed by everyone. But he wants to make the revenge isn't the last word. He gives life and liberty the bombers and conspirators. The people praise the happiness of this historic moment.
