History
The Governor of a Spanish history, Don Pizarro, leads a regiment of horror in his institution. Innocent people become political victims of his brutal access. Don Florestan of Seville wants to enlighten this emphatically, but even enters the hand of the person. He languishes in inhumane solitary confinement for over two years. His friends think he is dead, only his wife Leonore is lost yet the lost. Because she imagines Florestan captive, she works at the jailer Rocco as NC. In cross-dressing and taking the name Fidelio she do heavy work, is attracting the confidence of their superiors and win even the love of his daughter of Marzelline.

Act
Vergeblich bemüht sich der Pförtner Jacquino um die Zuwendung Marzellines. Seit Fidelio im Haus ist, hat sie für sein Werben kein Ohr. Fidelio-Leonore kehrt von Erledigungen aus Sevilla zurück. Rocco ist wieder vom Geschick und Pflichtbewusstsein seines neuen Gehilfen angetan: Bald schon sollen Fidelio und Marzelline ein Paar werden. Marzelline und Rocco träumen von einer behaglichen Zukunft, Jacquino sieht seine Aussichten schwinden, Fidelio-Leonore graut es vor der Ungewissheit. Da tritt Don Pizarro auf. Aus einem vertraulichen Schreiben erfährt er, dass der Minister seinem Amtsmissbrauch auf der Spur ist: Eine überraschende Visite soll ihn endgültig überführen. Pizarro reagiert prompt: Ein Posten beobachtet die Hauptstraße, ein Trompetensignal soll den Besuch ankündigen. Florestan, das prominenteste Opfer, muss schleunigst beseitigt werden. Da Rocco den Mord verweigert, wird der Gouverneur die Tat selbst vollziehen. Nur ein Grab im Verlies soll ihm der Kerkermeister zuvor schaufeln. Marzelline und Fidelio-Leonore erbitten von Rocco einen kurzen Ausgang für die leichteren Gefangenen. Voller Freude genießen die Häftlinge die warme Frühlingssonne - vergeblich späht Fidelio-Leonore nach einem vertrauten Gesicht. Sie erfährt vielmehr bestürzt von dem neuen Auftrag Roccos und will seine schwere Arbeit im Kerker teilen: Wird sie dem Gatten sein Grab bereiten helfen? Empört hat Pizarro den Spaziergang der Gefangenen bemerkt und lässt keine Rechtfertigung gelten. Nur der dringende Mordplan an Florestan verhindert schlimme Sanktionen.

Second elevator
In the Dungeon, the exhausted Florestan ponders his fate. Its position seems hopeless to him, only the consciousness of fulfilled duty comforts him. He feels out of touch by an Angel trains Leonores heavenly freedom in an ecstatic vision. Rocco, Fidelio-Leonore painstakingly uncover a cistern. Florestan learns at last, who presides over this prison and wants to contact his wife in Seville let. Fidelio-Leonore now sure knows who she is. A small enjoying with bread and wine seems HSH last joy to be, because already approaching Pizarro. But when he brings out to the deadly blow, Fidelio-Leonore arises before the prisoners: "Kill first his wife!" She keeps the setting after a handgun, as the trumpet sounds. The arrival of the Minister promises a revolution: liberation for the oppressed, punishment for the oppressor. Pizarro rushes from the Dungeon, Rocco says get rid of his old master, Leonore and Florestan sink each other happily in the arms. -The people and the convicts welcome expectantly on the parade ground in front of the castle the Minister, Don Fernando. On behalf of the King, he announced general amnesty and the end of political arbitrariness. He recognizes his trendy dead friend in Florestan. Leonore may solve the chain of long humiliated, Pizarro is arrested. The liberated jubilation is the reunited pair, a praise celebrating the faithful love. ", It will never be too high Sung, Savior of the husband!"
