The Vienna Opera Summer festival will return to Austria this summer with a new production of Georges Bizet’s “Carmen,” running July 1-18, 2026, at the Opernarena am Heumarkt in Vienna. The open-air production is part of Wiener Opernsommer 2026 and will feature multiple evening performances throughout the festival run.
According to festival information, performances are scheduled for July 1, 3, 4, 7 and 8 at 7:45 p.m., with additional dates continuing through July 18. Tickets are currently on sale starting at €110.10.
The production centers on Bizet’s classic opera about the free-spirited Carmen and her tumultuous relationship with soldier Don José. Festival organizers said the 2026 staging will once again transform Vienna’s Heumarkt into a large-scale opera arena following previous editions of the summer event.
Promotional materials for the production state that the performance will include narration framing the story and background on the creation of the opera. “Carmen” remains one of the most frequently performed operas in the repertory and includes music such as the “Habanera” and “Toreador Song.”
