Annie Dorsen Debuts PIECE SANS PAROLES and MAGICAL

Obie Award-winning director/writer Annie Dorsen (PASSING STRANGE) and choreographer Anne Juren will collaborate in July 2010 on "Magical" - a solo dance piece that uses the frame of a magic show to deal with the possibility for illusion within dance. Blending choreography, magic, and quotations from performance artists like Carolee Schneemann and Karen Finley, "Magical" blurs the boundaries between spectatorship and voyeurism, illusion and transparency, diversion and challenge. In May 2010, Dorsen collaborates again with Anne Juren and choreographer DD Dorvillier on "Pièce Sans Paroles" - where Dorsen directs Dorvillier and Juren in Tennessee Williams' "The Two-Character Play" then removes the words, but leaves the staging, the acting, the characters, and the design intact. "Pièce Sans Paroles" premieres at Brut in Vienna on May 8; then performs at Rencontres Choréographiques in Paris; and the Salzburg Festival.

I MISS - which was originally the centerpiece of Dorsen's pop-political performance project DEMOCRACY IN AMERICA, which played PS122 in Spring of 2008 - is a mesmerizing short about a girl (Miranda Torn) prompted by her mother (LeeAnn Brown) in the recitation of an intensely romantic poem. I MISS is a meditation on feminism, love and the notion of acting. I MISS is a co-creation by Annie Dorsen, and actors Philippa Kaye and Tony Torn. It was previously screened at the New York Film Festival as part of the "Views from the Avant-Garde" series and the Nantucket Film Festival, both in 2009.

 In addition to numerous awards for "Passing Strange," Ms Dorsen is the recipient of several fellowships and honors, including the Sir John Gielgud fellowship from SSDC, and both the Bill Foeller and Boris Sagal fellowships from the Williamstown Theatre Festival. She has taught at NYU, Fordham University and Playwright's Horizons, and is a graduate of the Yale School of Drama.
