Elea was born in the desert in Aranda country, Central Australia, in 1902. Two years later, he was baptised Albert. Thirty one years after that, at his first solo exhibition of watercolour landscapes, he signed his work with his father’s surname for the first time: Albert Namatjira.
This story captures the intense beauty, depth, opportunism, mateship and injustice that has shaped our country. The rich watercolours of Namatjira’s story are transformed into a momentous theatrical event, and have already brought audiences to their feet night after night at the Belvoir Street Theatre.
