Sydney Theatre Company and Colonial First State Global Asset Management present
Blood Wedding by Federico García Lorca, translated by Iain Sinclair from 1 August to 11 September 2011. Opens Friday 5 August 2011 at 8pm
Wharf 1, Sydney Theatre Company, The Wharf, Pier 4 Hickson Road, Walsh Bay

Following his acclaimed production of Our Town for Sydney Theatre Company in 2010, Iain
Sinclair returns to direct a cast including Leah Purcell, Lynette Curran, Toni Scanlan,
Kenneth Spiteri, Yalin Ozucelik and the female members of The Residents, in his new
translation of Federico Garcia Lorca's Blood Wedding. Featuring live music by guitarist and
composer Andrew Veivers, the classic Andalusian tale of passion, betrayal, violence and
blood feuding, is at STC's Wharf 1 from 1 August, opening on 5 August 2011.
When a son announces his intention to marry, his mother feels a terrible sense of fear and
foreboding. Tradition and history pulse through their small community as the mother is
haunted by ghosts of the past and her would be daughter-in-law is gripped by a phantom of
her own. Passion takes on a new dimension as a force - or el duende, as Lorca himself called
it - raging through the characters and across the stage.
Renowned for his poetic blending of the personal with the political, Federico García Lorca,
whose other plays include The House of Bernarda Alba and Yerma, is believed to have been
murdered, aged 38, by supporters of General Franco at the start of the Spanish Civil War.

An exceptional ensemble cast includes some of Australia's most respected actors. Leah
Purcell's numerous credits include television's Police Rescue and Fallen Angels; critically
acclaimed roles in Lantana, The Proposition and Jindabyne; her hit one-woman show Box
The Pony (the published version of which won the Queensland and NSW Premiers' Literary
Awards) and the co-authored book, film and play, Black Chicks Talking. Her many other
stage roles include Stuff Happens, The Marriage of Figaro, Bran Nue Dae and The Story of
Miracles at Cookie's Table, for which she was awarded a Helpmann Award for Best Actress.
Lynette Curran has appeared in productions for STC, Melbourne Theatre Company,
Queensland Theatre Company and Company B, amongst others. Television credits include
Bellbird, A Country Practice, The Flying Doctors, Blue Heelers, Chandon Pictures, City
Homicide and Love My Way. Her role in Call Me Mum earned her an AFI Award
nomination. Most recently, she has appeared in Rake and Underbelly: The Golden Mile. Her
many films include Bliss, Oscar and Lucinda, The Boys and Somersault for which she was
awarded an AFI Award and a Film Critic Circle Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.
The production features set design by Rufus Didwiszus, known for his work with Les Ballets
C de la B, Thomas Ostermeier and the Schaubühne, working with an Australian company for
the first time.
