Mad March Hare Theatre Company in association with Red Line Productions is pleased to present the Sydney premiere of Amy Herzog's Belleville, a thrilling drama that examines the limits of trust and dependency in a world where love can turn pathological and our most intimate relationships may not be what they seem.

Abby and Zack, young American newlyweds, have abandoned a comfortable postgraduate life in the States for Belleville, a bustling, bohemian, multicultural Parisian neighbourhood. But as secrets both minor and monumental are revealed, their fraught relationship begins to unravel.

Mad March Hare's Artistic Director and director of this production, Claudia Barrie (Shivered, Dark Vanilla Jungle), has compiled an impressive cast including Josh Anderson (This Heaven, Carlotta), Emily Eskell (Love's Labour Lost, The Fragments), Chantelle Jamieson (Crownies, The Importance of Being Earnest), Aldo Mignone (A Place to Call Home, Danger 5), and Mansoor Noor (Safety Switch, Cleverman).

Belleville had its world premiere at Yale Repertory Theatre in 2011 before opening Off-Broadway at the New York Theatre Workshop in 2013. The play received a 2013 Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Play and was a finalist for the 2013 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize. Amy Herzog's other plays include After the Revolution (Lilly Award); 4000 Miles (Pulitzer Prize finalist, Obie Award for the Best New American Play); and The Great God Pan. She is a recipient of the Whiting Writers' Award, the Benjamin H. Danks Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Helen Merrill Award, the Joan and Joseph F. Cullman Award for Extraordinary Creativity and the New York Times Outstanding Playwright Award. She has taught playwriting at Bryn Mawr and Yale. She received an MFA from the Yale School of Drama.

"A quietly devastating play... Both a perceptive drama depicting the sudden fraying of a young marriage and a nail-biting psychological thriller... Belleville is among the most suspenseful plays I've seen in years." - New York Times

"Belleville is... convincing evidence that, among the new crop of young American playwrights, Herzog is in a class by herself." - TIME

"Belleville is funny. It's suspenseful. It's mock-shocking, then genuinely horrifying." - New Haven Theatre Jerk
