The world premiere of Casta by Adrienne Dawes is presented by Salvage Vanguard Theater and the Blanton Museum of Art in conversation with the Painted Cloth: Fashion and Ritual in Colonial Latin America exhibition. Casta is co-directed by jkjk with original music by composer Graham Reynolds featuring a remix by Demián Gálvez.
When an apprentice is commissioned to paint a casta series for a wealthy patron, he tries to conform his work to a set hierarchy but finds the images revolt, illuminating a complex portrait of fluid Latinx identities.
This project is generously funded by Mid-America Arts Alliance, the National Endowment for the Arts, Texas Commision on the Arts, MAP Fund, and Austin Community Foundation. The City of Austin is proud to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
