Texas Performing Arts Presents SPOKFREVO ORQUESTRA, 3/24

By:

Texas Performing Arts presents the Austin debut of Brazilian big band sensation SpokFrevo Orquestra, Saturday, March 24 at Bass Concert Hall. Touring the United States for the first time, Maestro Spock and his 17-member ensemble offer an exclusive cultural musical experience through their unique blending of jazz music and frevo, which is a mix of musical styles traditionally associated with Brazilian Carnival.

Inaldo Cavalcante, more commonly known as Maestro Spok, works as the musical director and saxophonist of the ensemble. Accompanied by an array of instruments, including trumpets, trombones, bass, guitar, and a rhythm section, Spok reignites the Brazilian musical style of frevo. The band combines the vibrant music of elaborated arrangements and deep roots that embodies classic frevo and fuses it with the musical freedom of jazz.

SpokFrevo Orquestra began their journey in 2003 in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil. SpokFrevo Orquestra immediately challenged the limitations of frevo in its supporting role and began to create a unique musical style based on musical excellence. Though initially challenged by purists of the frevo style, the group’s success took off in 2004 with the release of their first CD, Passo de Anjo. Shortly after the release of the CD, O Estado de São Paulo newspaper called the album one of the best three Brazilian albums of the year.

SpokFrevo Orquestra is presented by Texas Performing Arts’ ArtesAméricas program. In partnership with the Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies, ArtesAméricas promotes cultural dialogue in the Americas through the performing arts.
