Memory. Family. Illusion.
Next onstage at Marietta’s New Theatre in the Square is the Tennessee Williams classic, The Glass Menagerie. The play takes place in the memory of Tom Wingfield as he recalls his fragile household and what transpired there. His mother, Amanda, is a faded, tragic remnant of Southern gentility who lives in poverty in a dingy St. Louis apartment with Tom and his sister Laura. Amanda strives to give meaning and direction to her lives and the lives of her children, though her methods are ineffective and irritating. Tom is driven nearly to distraction by his mother’s nagging and seeks escape in alcohol and the world of the movies. Each member of the family clings to their illusions in one way or another, and Tom invites the audience into the memory of his family’s little world.
After captivating you with previous productions such as Native Son and La Gringa, director Emil Thomas is delighted to bring you The Glass Menagerie, opening on August 31st and running through October 1st.
