You Can't Stop The Beat This Summer At Legacy Theatre

The Hit Broadway Musical Hairspray is making a big, bold appearance at the Legacy Theatre! This upbeat and powerful show opens July 6th and runs through August 5th.

Winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Hairspray is a family-friendly musical, piled bouffant-high with laughter, romance and deliriously tuneful songs. Based on the 1988 film by John Waters, the musical includes 1960s-style dance music and "downtown" rhythm and blues. The hit musical was adapted into the 2007 film and performed live on ABC in 2016.

It's 1962 in Baltimore, and the lovable plus-size teen, Tracy Turnblad, has only one desire - to dance on the popular "Corny Collins Show." When Tracy wins a role on the show, she becomes a celebrity overnight! Tracy must use her newfound power to dethrone the reigning Teen Queen, win the affections of heartthrob, and lead social change by campaigning for the show's integration...all without denting her 'do!

Mark Smith will direct Hairspray, following dozens of Legacy productions including the summer hits Beauty & the Beast and Mary Poppins. "We always look forward to producing a big, fun show for the whole family each summer," says Smith. "Hairspray is not only an upbeat, musical with lovable characters and incredible music, it also has a great message. It reminds us to be true to ourselves and to celebrate our uniqueness."

"I have always loved this show" says Executive Producer Bethany Smith. "There is a nostalgia to the 1960's music, but it's full of humor and excitement too. Also, I love bringing in actors from all over the country for our big musicals! They are amazing!" Starring as Tracey Turnblad, and making her Georgia debut, is California native Cassidy Fraley. Other performers return to Legacy, including Justin Thompson as Corny Collins (Godspell, Beauty & the Beast), Fracena Byrd (Nunsense, Mary Poppins) as Motormouth Maybelle, George Deavours as Edna Turnblad (1776, Chicago), as well as Amy Alford, Mary Grace Bridges, Jasmyn Coleman, Erin Foltz, Shea Johnson, Bert Lyons, Evan McLean, Thaddeus Morris, Caleb Peters, Andrew Quackenbush, Kaitlyn Sage, Hannah Stephens, Micaela Tardie and Tyree Thornton. Making their Legacy debut, the cast also includes Andrew Boone, Jaimar Brown, Joshua Goodrun-Green, Eliah Johnson, Jessie Maye, Akili McDuffey, Morgan McGhee, Kavin Moore, and Thomas Whitcomb. Hairspray is music directed by Jodi Cotton and choreographed by Christie Zimmerman.

The Legacy's twelfth season concludes with Hairspray. Legacy's 2018-19 season will include the new musical Daddy Long Legs, Away in the Basement (the sequel to Church Basement Ladies), Always Patsy Cline, The Bridges of Madison County, and Disney's Newsies. Season subscriptions are on sale now and individual ticket sales will go on sale this fall.

Hairspray runs July 6th through August 5th with performances Fridays & Saturdays at 8pm and Saturdays & Sundays at 3pm. Adult tickets are $30-$45, Senior & Student discounts are available as well as discounts for groups of 20 or more.
