Vocalist Sachal Vasandani Headlines Emory Jazz Fest, 2/10

By:

Vocalist Sachal Vasandani performs at the Emory Jazz Fest, Fri., Feb. 10, 8 p.m. at the Schwartz Center for Performing Arts. Joining Vasandani will be the Gary Motley Trio: pianist Gary Motley, Emory University's Director of Jazz Studies, bassist Herman Burney and drummer Terreon Gully.

Vasandani possesses an uncanny sensibility to straddle the fine line between jazz and pop. With his breakthrough 2007 debut, Eyes Wide Open, Vasandani established himself as one of the most promising voices in modern jazz. A 2010 DownBeat "Rising Star" poll winner, Vasandani presented his distinctive blend of jazz and pop with the critically acclaimed album, We Move in 2009.

His 2011 release, Hi-Fly, is a mix of standards, originals and pop covers showcasing Vasandani's ability to filter a wide range of material through his highly individual vision. The album features "One Mint Julep," a collaboration with the legendary Jon Hendricks, Amy Winehouse's "Love is a Losing Game," the classic "The Very Thought of You," as well as Vasandani's own pieces penned for the album.

The 2012 Emory Jazz Fest is Feb. 10-11 at the Schwartz Center for Performing Arts. Tickets for the Feb. 10 show with Sachal Vasandani are $15. Gary Motley will lead the Big Band Night, Sat., Feb. 11, in a free show of traditional big band music. Other free public events include a jazz improvisation lecture and demonstration with the Gary Motley Trio, and a vocal master class with Sachal Vasandani and the Gary Motley Trio.
