MEN ON BOATS

FREE Stage Tour (a peek behind the scenes!): 6pm on Jan 31, 2019

Performances: Feb 15-23, 2019

FREE Opening Night Reception after the Feb. 15 performance

Ten explorers. Four boats. One Grand Canyon. Men On Boats is the true(ish) history of John Wesley Powell's 1869 expedition, when the one-armed captain and a crew of insane yet loyal volunteers set out to chart the course of the Colorado River. Using convention made familiar in Broadway blockbuster Hamilton, this thrilling and comical new play helps modern audiences envision Powell's historic trip using 19th-century customs but 21st-century language. And one more thing that helps us understand these men out of their comfort zone... all the men are portrayed by women, in a gently exaggerated style that both highlights and mocks the clichés of the hero adventurer archetype. Join us for a wild ride down the uncharted rivers! Written by Jaclyn Backhaus. Rated PG13

Tickets are $18-20 for adults, $16-18 for seniors and $12-14 for students, depending on seat location. Select your own seats online at www.gainesvilleTHEATREalliance.org or by calling the Box Office at 678.717.3624.

And the stunning springtime season finale:

Cabaret

Book by Joe Masteroff based on the play by John Van Druten and stories by Christopher Isherwood; Music by John Kander and Lyrics by Fred Ebb

at UNG-Gainesville's Ed Cabell Theatre, 3820 Mundy Mill Road, Oakwood

FREE Stage Tour (a peek behind the scenes!): 6pm, March 26, 2019

Performances: April 9-20, 2019

FREE Opening Night Reception catered after the April 9 performance

In a Berlin nightclub, as the 1920's draw to a close, a garish Master of Ceremonies welcomes the audience and assures them they will forget all their troubles at the CABARET. With the Emcee's bawdy songs as wry commentary, CABARET explores the dark, heady, and tumultuous life of Berlin's natives and expatriates as Germany slowly yields to the emerging Third Reich. Cliff, a young American writer newly arrived in Berlin, is immediately taken by English singer Sally Bowles. Meanwhile, Fräulein Schneider, proprietor of Cliff and Sally's boarding house, tentatively begins a romance with Herr Schultz, a mild-mannered fruit seller who happens to be Jewish. Musical numbers include "Willkommen," "Cabaret," "Don't Tell Mama" and "Two Ladies." This show reminds us that, no matter how difficult the world may seem, life is a cabaret. Rated R

Tickets are $18-20 for adults, $16-18 for seniors and $12-14 for students, depending on seat location. Select your own seats online at www.gainesvilleTHEATREalliance.org or by calling the Box Office at 678.717.3624.

waiting for Godot

by Samuel Beckett

At the UNG-Gainesville Ed Cabell Theatre, 3920 Mundy Mill Rd., Oakwood

Preview performance 7:30pm, Nov. 8, 2018

Performances: 7:30pm, Nov. 9-12, 2018

Waiting for Godot, Samuel Beckett's existential classic, begins with two men on a barren road by a leafless tree. Vladimir and Estragon, characterized as "tramps," contemplate hopelessness and what to do with themselves as they wait for assistance from Godot. We soon see the world they inhabit operates with its own set of rules-where nothing happens, nothing is certain, and there's never anything to do. "Nothing to be done" is one of the many phrases that is repeated throughout the play, which reads like somewhat of a language poem, as our jovial friends grapple with meaning in the modern world. Rated PG13

The Kiss

Preview performance 7:30pm, April 11, 2019

Performances: 7:30pm, April 12-15, 2019

Set in a museum in front of Gustav Klimt's beloved painting, The Kiss, this play invites the audience to share in moments of compassion and comedy as pairs of characters experience this famous painting and find the courage to connect, with differing levels of success. Playwright, Helena Scholz-Carlson is a recent graduate of Northwestern University and her work was just celebrated by the Horizon Theatre's New South Young Playwrights Festival. This full production of The Kiss will be combined throughout the weekend with smaller staged readings celebrating the development process of new plays that speak truth into our lives. Rated PG13
