Newnan Theatre Company Opens THE LARAMIE PROJECT, 7/19

By:

"The Laramie Project," Newnan Theatre Company's second summer show for fourteen to twenty-one-year-olds, opens July 19 and runs through July 22. "City of Angels," performed by the same age group, played last week to enthusiastic audiences.

"Both teen shows this summer contain mature content," said Artistic Director Paul Conroy. "We want to give this age group an opportunity to perform in challenging shows that they would not normally be able to do."

Directed by Jennifer Dorrell, "The Laramie Project" consists of real interviews with people from a town in Wyoming where a gay student was brutally murdered in 1998.

"A group from New York, the Tectonic Theater Project, went to Laramie and interviewed people over the course of several months," said Dorrell. "This piece was put together based on those interviews. The people give their point of view on what happened and talk about the place where they're from. The sixteen actors play sixty different characters."

The actors have been challenged "to express not just the words but the physical idiosyncrasies of the different characters they're playing," said Dorrell. "For example, one of the characters is a Baptist minister who protests at the murdered student's funeral. I purposely gave a gay student that role."
