BWW Reviews: It's Impossible to Feel Blue at the BLUE MAN GROUP

By:

"If you would like to establish a connection with people from another culture, it's always good to offer a few gifts as a gesture of friendship. But the best way to forge a lasting bond is to create something together. Whether it's a meal, an art project, or just a spontaneous dance party, when you create with others, you build a connection that lasts a lifetime." -From "The Social Synapse" by Nora Epinephrin and Sarah Tonin

This is the quote that is on the screen as the audience enters the theater when arriving to the Blue Man Group. That's exactly what Blue Man Group does. It creates an experience that includes everyone in the theater.

The Blue Man Group is not a show that one can just simply sit back and enjoy. It's a visual spectacle that you have to engage in with your eyes and ears. But as part theatrical performance, part rock concert, the Blue Man Group captivates audiences of all ages. In fact, the first performance of Blue Man Group here in Atlanta was "Kid's Night", so the audience was full of children who were enjoying the show just as much as the adults.

Besides some voiceover announcements, there is no spoken lines in the Blue Man group. The men are silent the whole show, but they still find ways of expressing themselves with their bodies and actions.

The blue men themselves are quite impressive. They play drums. They have excellent improv skills and comedic timing. They catch marshmallows and paintballs in their mouths. You wonder where they find men who are capable of doing all of this or if it's a rigorous training process.

While some of the skits in this national tour production have been in the show for years, the production as a whole is still very fresh and fun. The dance party at the end with the booty shaking and the balls floating over the audience is a nice interactive addition,(not to mention, the hilarious announcement that follows requesting the retrieval of their balls).

If you have not yet experienced the Blue Man Group, now is a great time. This production is one not to be missed.

The Blue Man Group plays Atlanta's Fabulous Fox Theatre (660 Peachtree Street NE, Atlanta, Georgia 30308) April 7-12, 2015. Tickets start at $33 and can be purchased at http://foxtheatre.org or by calling 1-855-285-8499.
