This week, Kennesaw State University presented its opening of A MAN OF NO IMPORTANCE. The musical, taking place in Dublin in 1964, focuses on a community that seems all too familiar as our modern world struggles to accept anyone with a different religion, sexuality or skin color. The show features the character of Alfie Byrne, who is literally a man of no importance. However average his characteristics, his journey is tragically beautiful.

Hayden Rowe leads the cast as Alfie with a remarkably brave performance. Rowe immediately sets the tone of this character and never misses a beat. Through his timid body language, perfected Irish accent and a thoroughly compelling performance, he has set a standard on the Stillwell Theatre stage. His thought-provoking performance will leave you feeling melancholic but very hopeful all at once.

Among the cast, there were several other actors that just made every moment they were on stage their own. Danny Crowe, portraying Alfie's best bud Robbie Fay, has an incredible voice booming with passion the entirety of the show. Brandy Bell is beautiful in the role of Adele Rice, causing you to smile every time she comes on stage. Steven Tayler, playing Baldy, will leave you speechless during "The Cuddles Mary Gave." Lastly, ensemble member Amy Reynolds, playing Mrs. Curtain, has an incredible stage presence that will surely steal your attention.

Visually the show is stunning. Guest artist David Morgan created a remarkable set, from the tiled floors to the electronic window panels. Faculty member Rebecca Makus does a remarkable job with lighting, adding substance to the performance when the audience does not even realize it. It is safe to say that the level of thought put into the design of the show is clearly well above the collegiate level. This is a collegiate show, right?

Overall, Director Amanda Morgan did an excellent job directing this piece. There was clearly a lot of thought put into the show to ensure that the message of community and acceptance truly comes to life. This is my first time seeing the show, so thank you for creating a standard that has set a very clear expectation.
